Does passport verification require phone no of local residents?

A friend of ours is asking for our phone no for passport verification. I want to know if it’s strictly required and if there are any ramifications of providing our phone no.

RPO does not need any details from neighbors.

The local police in each jurisdiction have their own processes for verification. Most of these processes are adhoc, keep changing frequently. In some places it is mandatory to get letters from 2 neighbours along with their Aadhar details and phone number. There should be no issues in sharing, if you know the person for a long time.
