UI(25F) recently joined a company that has a young founder. On the surface, everything looks legit—LinkedIn, website, employees—but internally, it feels disorganized. The team is a mix of very senior freelancers (guys in their 40s and 60s) and younger employees, which feels a bit odd.
Now, just 3-4 months in, they want to set up a subsidiary in a small country and have offered me the role of head(ceo). The salary and growth sound great, but something feels off.
Red Flags:
The founder claims to have high-level government connections (which I verified).
He has casually mentioned money laundering a few times—huge red flag.
We hung out once (we’re around the same age), and he claims to be part of some internal government circle, even showing some convincing proof.
When I suggested referring a family friend instead, he insisted that I must lead, though he’s okay with my friend tagging along. Makes me think they want someone young and easier to control.
No clear details on what the business will actually do—just that “locals will manage everything” while I oversee.
I’m worried this could be a shady setup where I end up as the scapegoat. I don’t want to miss out on a great opportunity, but I also don’t want to get caught in anything illegal.
What I need advice on:
1. If I (or my family friend) take the role, how do we legally protect ourselves from potential trouble abroad? any clause? agreements?
2. If I decide to back out, what’s the best way to do it without raising suspicion since I’ve already shown interest?
3. Am I just overthinking? It could be a life-changing opportunity, or it could be a money laundering scheme. Not sure if I’m being paranoid or if my gut feeling is right.
TL;DR: Offered a leadership role abroad after just a few months—sounds great but feels shady. Need legal advice.

EPlay your cards well. Accept the position only if they agree to offer citizenship by investment scheme in that country. Start building your own FIRE corpus with your increased remuneration so that if shit hits the FAN you have your own exit plan

UThere’s no citizenship guarantee tho since they said i’d be going up and down to that place – don’t have to stick permanently there.
The remuneration is great, but not that great that i can build a corpus so soon.
I just wanna know if i can sign any agreement that in the event of misfortune, I am not the one to be taken in charge of ( since i’ll be the head there)

EUnless you have seen anything explicitly illegal or anything related to money laundering then I guess nothing to worry about. As an IT services company your source of revenue will only be your paying clients. So only way you can launder money is by via fake projects by shell Companies. So keep an eye on your clients and revenue sources and all will be fine.

SBy your post I can tell one thing that you are greedy.
Since you are accepting that, do it. Take that offer ask that founder with government connections to do money laundering.
Meet politicians, launder their money, enjoy money. You won’t get caught for reasonable amount as your connections will protect you.
But make a choice by thinking of worst case also once that is jail.

I am scared of how i’d be signing up for this knowing its a hellhole, yet at the same time i feel like im missing on something big for me – just by overthinking to my gut

SYoung IT founder with high level politics connections? Money laundering match made in heaven.
Lol also if you are an IT company running with freelancers I am sure your team must not be that big or qualified to work on high level government projects?
What kind of projects have do you do?
I am asking this because if your company is nor good in IT still they have these connections, then your founder is giving them services more than just Tech lol.

UIf you don’t feel safe don’t do that. If he has political backing there will be opponents too and if anything happens you can be in trouble too

NOM. This is my assumption based on what you wrote. I have seen this in one of the companies where a lady employee sent to East from Bangalore just she has beauty but not at par with skills and she was replaced in a year after the setup and project sign-off.

Casually mentioning money laundering.
Sending you to a different country without clear idea of what you’re supposed to be doing.
For all you know, its human trafficking. I dont know why you’re even considering a role (any role) without knowing what it requires. Even if there is nothing illegitimate about what’s happening, its still a huge red flag to take something without knowing what it requires. And then on top of that, being sent to a foreign country means you can potentially be isolated and who knows what. Let me put it this way – your worse case scenario is not ‘merely’ money laundering. It’s not at all unheard of for visas to be taken away and then people to be stuck as essentially slave labour.
You don’t know what they want you to sign up for – why are you even thinking of signing up?
