April 4, 2025 at 7:01 amHi there,I recently applied for a new position in a sports clinical set up in Mumbai.
They employer is demanding that I have my original degree certificate handed over to them for the employment period.
They are willing to offer me a letter of undertaking for the same. The job also comes with a 1 year bond period.
Personally, I do not feel comfortable handing over my documents for any position.
Moreover, I see that it’s against the laws to demand original documents from an employee (falls under bonded labour ; 1947)
Any inputs regarding this is appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

April 4, 2025 at 7:29 pmBtw if you ever get stuck with someone holding your original degree, you can just visit the head office of your respective Uni and get it reprinted for the cost of 1000-1500. I had my 12th degree reprinted from the CBSE office since I lost the original and it only cost me 500.

April 4, 2025 at 11:42 amWell in Schools it’s a mandated custom for new teachers to submit a few original Certificate. This is because if they get a good offer in the middle of the academy they will ask for one or two months salary. Now they have started to submit what you mentioned in color zerox of the same in bond paper. So if he jumps it becomes a worthless paper with His former school. Also schools don’t have the practice of verifying with previous schools.

April 4, 2025 at 10:29 amI was thinking of color photocopy. I was advised to get a notarized/true copy for the same, as it should be considered as an equivalent to original.-

April 4, 2025 at 10:31 amDon’t spend money on notarized docs
Colour Xerox and laminate and be hard and strong on that being the OG copy
Maybe pay few 20-30rs extra for better quality print and paper but that’s it-

April 4, 2025 at 10:35 amWould you suggest I do the high quality color photocopy directly? Or would you think speaking with the employer regarding this would be better to start with? Thanks for all your inputs! I really appreciate that.

April 4, 2025 at 10:48 amAny company having even 10% Morality would never ask original docs
If they are that means they have history of people running away due to anything(overwork, measly hike, toxic work culture)
So to avoid it they are taking your certificate as collateral
So again I’d suggest don’t join and look for better opportunities
But everyone is on different spectrum financially and I don’t know about you
So best case scenario you give them high quality xerox as Original and you stay one year and then they give back
Worst case scenario you given them OG and you want to leave anytime and they hold it giving any bullshit reason just so you can’t switch -

April 5, 2025 at 4:22 amDo it directly and make sure it is laminated. Say it is to protect the certificate.

April 4, 2025 at 9:18 amNo, strictly don’t. It’s most likely because of the one year bond – let’s say you join and wish to quit, the original certificate will not allow you to do so and you’ll feel stuck.Btw do question why do they need the originals.

April 4, 2025 at 10:29 amIts a trap. The undertaking is useless. They’ll probably squeeze you for work without a social life and when you try to leave, they’ll delay in returning the og docs back.
Them asking you for the og doc itself implies they are not bothered by what the law says. -

April 4, 2025 at 10:46 amIf at all they want original, they can keep in digital form. There’s no need for a physical copy. -
