Employer says he has not put me on payroll. what should i do?

I recently joined a hospital and its been 2 weeks i have been working there. I requested for some changes in the schedule following which the hr said i have not been put on the payroll yet. Does this mean they are trying to kick me out? Or is this standard procedure in hospitals to not put the employee on payroll for some time. This is the first time I have encountered something like this. If what i understand is correct, shouldnt they have already had me on payroll?
