Ex boyfriend putting a legal case on the money he gave me

So me and my ex dated for around a year , during that time I was in bachelor college, it was just me and my mom ( dad passed away when I was younger)
Around 3 months into dating him , my mother fell severely ill and he helped out with her bills as well as my college fees .
It all summed upto around 4 lakhs.
Everything was fine until he said his family is pressuring him to get married ! And I said I can’t right now because I’m still studying and I have no plans of marrying until I’m well settled .
Within 6 months of this conversation he got married . We broke up after his roka was done.( Told me on the day that he got fixed -and marriage was in a month )
I was heartbroken didn’t contact him – but told him I would pay back when I can afford to , he agreed.
But yesterday he said he is sending a legal notice to me to recover the money and he won’t back off until he has taken it all. I told him to give me 6 months so I graduate and then I can start paying him in parts but he isn’t budging.
I am still pursuing my masters and my mom already has taken a loan for this.
How do I handle this situation?

Don’t acknowledge the money is a debt in written messages.

If you have already done that.
Go hire a lawyer.

If I was your lawyer i would likely suggest..
Filing case under ipc section 90 and 375 and once contact with his lawyer is made ask your lawyer to go for settlement against you taking back the Cr. Case

That’s why you shouldn’t be a lawyer. Kuch bhi ho 375 laga do?
