Friend lost his Airtel number to Sim swap fraud- anyway to get it back

Hi everyone,
One of my friends became a victim of SIM swap fraud around 5 months ago. He lost control of his Airtel mobile number, which he had been using for the past 12 years. Now, the number is registered under someone else , most likely the fraudster.

He has already filed complaints with cybercrime, the local police station, consumer forum, and both online and offline Airtel stores. He has tried everything he could to get the number back, as it is linked to all his important accounts.

Now, when we call the number, it says “doesn’t exist.” Airtel recently told him that the services on that number have been discontinued.

Is there any way to get the number back after it’s been disconnected like this? Has anyone gone through something similar and found a solution?

Any help or suggestions would mean a lot. Thanks!

This is extremely crazy scam.

I saw similar reddit posts where someone became victim of sim swap and lost 46 lakh.

Please explain how did it happen so others can be aware
