March 14, 2025 at 5:49 pmMy friend’s brother, who is a recovering opioid addict (clean for 2 years), had a brief relationship (1 month) with a girl from another town. They had unprotected sex, and she became pregnant. When he went to visit her, her family kidnapped him and forced them into marriage with the help of the village pradhan, who was bribed 1.5 lakh rupees to facilitate this.
Now, the girl is living with my friend’s family. She’s mentally harassing and verbally abusing them daily. My friend is the primary breadwinner, while her brother and father earn very little. The family is terrified that if they take any action, the girl will file false cases against them, leading to potential jail time.
The girl’s family is poor but known for being aggressive and having a thuggish reputation in their area. They orchestrated the forced marriage and haven’t even visited their daughter during her pregnancy. The girl seems to have a gold-digger mentality, and when she realized that the guy isn’t as wealthy as she thought, she started creating constant problems, though there’s been no physical violence so far.
My friend’s family has accepted the marriage and wants to live peacefully, but the girl is refusing to cooperate. What legal steps can they take to protect themselves and address this situation?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. -
