        Hey everyone,

I just had a weird and honestly scary experience. I got a random call from someone claiming to be from IDFC Bank. He said that a “colleague” of mine had taken a loan of ₹11 lakhs, hasn’t paid it back, and listed me as a guarantor, meaning they now want me to pay the amount.

The thing is I don’t know anyone like the person he mentioned. The caller claimed this supposed colleague works in Gurgaon (I work in Bangalore and don’t know anyone in Gurgaon). Yet, he knew my full name, designation, and even mentioned a few of my actual colleague’s names, which really threw me off.

I was pretty shaken, so I ended up yelling at him and blocking the number. He hasn’t called back since.

Deep down, I feel like this is a scam, but the fact that he knew so much about me makes me uneasy. Could he have just pulled this info from LinkedIn or some other source? Has anyone else faced something like this before? Should I raise file a complaint since I’ve the guy’s name and number?

Would really appreciate any advice or similar experiences!

TLDR: Got a call about a colleague’s unpaid ₹11L loan- feels like a scam.

Check your Cibil report if you have been made guarantor for any of the loans. It’s highly unlikely they made you the guarantor without your knowledge. You can use google pay to generate cibil report.

Yes I checked the same. No loans under mine except for my credit card and my CIBIL is not affected as well.

This is most likely a scam involving someone who knows you. Stay calm and think for a moment. Assuming that the loan is legit, even if the caller knew your name and the borrower’s; how would they know the names of your other colleagues? When taking a loan, you don’t provide a list of all your coworkers to the bank.

You should report this to the cyber cell of the police.

Scam. It’s easy to get your name and that of your few colleagues from LinkedIn.

Thank you! I assumed the same but a part of me got paranoid.

You should only be shaken up if someone can read your mind. If your information has been put out there on any website, rest assured, that data has been scraped, packaged and sold many times over. Data privacy is not a thing at this stage.

All the information the scammer presented could have easily been collected and aggregated from social media and data brokers. So, just because they have this information, doesn’t mean they are from a credible source.

Appreciate your input. It’s scary that how easy it is for someone to get hold of our details. Data privacy is a joke atp.
