May 9, 2025 at 7:59 amHello, I was given a challan yesterday for public smoking and I did not go to the police or court . Should I go? What’s the procedure looks like if I go? I don’t have a problem paying the fine and everything but what if they escalate it because from what I understood they charged me this after asking me whether I am kannad or not ( i am not kannad )
I am in Bangalore,karnataka
They only have my name and phone no.
A call came at stipulated time but it was marked spam so I didn’t not picked it up
Need help -

May 9, 2025 at 8:05 amNAL, Idk if they want to make an example due to the Kannada language thing going on, but I was fined once for smoking in public and didnβt get any calls or any further action. This was in Gurgaon, they just gave me the receipt for the challan and that was it.-

They don’t charge for public smoking and even if they did they would have taken the fine and let me go buy here the problem is I don’t speak kannada and going to police station due their great rapport is always scary.-

May 9, 2025 at 8:26 amDo you have a Kannada friend that you can take with you, because other than fine I donβt think there even is any punishment for public smoking, there is a chance that itβs a tactic to extort money.-

May 9, 2025 at 8:14 amNo, you cannot be jailed for smoking in public in India, but you can be fined. The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 (COTPA) prohibits smoking in designated public places and violations can result in a fine of up to Rs. 200.-
