Bam a signal app user from 2 years but recently in march my local police called me and said i have some international links agter verification that it was real or not i went for investigation and they litrally made charge sheet against me for using things and started saying things like “esme bohot user privacy hoti ha ” ase apps nai use kar sakte they litreally mentally drained me and my family for this …is signal app really illegal ?

AIf a chargesheet has indeed been filed, the matter is now between you and the court, and the prosecution will have to prove its case. However, I strongly doubt that a chargesheet has actually been filed just for using Signal. You should demand all the details… what exactly is the complaint, who filed it, n what are the specific allegations against you?
Simply having Signal installed on your phone does not make you a criminal. Signal is not a banned app in India, and there is no legal restriction on its use. If the police have harassed you over this, you may want to consider legal recourse against arbitrary action. Additionally, if the chargesheet has indeed been filed, kindly engage the services of a competent advocate asap.

Bi am 19 yr old so my parents think i am dumb so they made the best decision of not taking me with them and rather just take my phone and my elder brother even my smartest elder brother in the whole bloodline of my family after meeting with the police they all are convinced that i am wrong

MThat’s very stupid of them, and you not going actually seems like you’re guilty of something. Go directly with a lawyer and get all the info. You can’t trust secondhand info from your family as they may not know the difference between actual chargesheet and cops randomly bullying.

MThere’s absolutely nothing illegal about signal. I’ve also used it and the only reason I’ve not fully transitioned to it is that most people I know are still on WhatsApp.
Something is very weird about your situation. It could be cops running some scam, but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that someone close to you is trying to gaslight you or get something from you by making you feel ashamed or guilty.
Please go directly and politely ask for the information. No need to be confrontational with the cops, but politely and humbly ask them all the info such as –
Is there any case against you/ has anyone filed a complaint
Has an FIR been filed?
Has a chargesheet been filed?
Do they need any additional info from you (make it look like you’re eager to fully co-operate)If they say FIR/ chargesheet has been filed, ask them what you should do next, etc. then after leaving, ensure that a lawyer is on the case. But I actually doubt there’s a real case here.
If they have questions just say that my family wasn’t able to explain what happened, so I took a friend and came to find out
It’s safer to go with a lawyer or a friend who’s not connected to your family – not sure of your location but there are legal aid services in every city run by local law schools etc that provide free legal help . You can ask them if they would be able to accompany you – else take a friend.

BWould have done that all by myself since I was teenager 2 years ago so my number was under my Dad’s adhar card ..so he was the main person who you called at the station with the phone and my dad is not that much aware about tech ..so it was very easy for police to say shit …my brother was also with him and him being the best brother also thinks I am wrong

KNot a lawyer but curious about what is happening.
What state are you located in?
How did cops contact you? Phone call to your number or visit to your residence?
Some things to think about or inquire/discuss with family –
Does anyone else in your house use signal?
Anyone that might have access to your WiFi password that uses signal / may be into illegal stuff like smoking w33d and stuff?
Obviously first priority is lawyering up, getting more written info/paperwork on what evidence they have, copy of chargesheet if already made etc.

VNal. Your parents are messing with you, the police can’t file charge sheets on non existent offences, last I checked “too much privacy” isn’t illegal and i lived in India not pakistan
