Few days ago, I received funds from someone who says that they sent money via UPI by mistake to my UPI number due to a typo. I want to return the funds, but I’m hesitant to refund directly, because if the person on the other end were a scammer, they would file a chargeback even after I rightfully return the funds and I would lose my own money. I’m talking about the classic chargeback scam. I asked the person to contact their bank’s branch manager for help and I’d fully co-operate with the process and they say their bank isn’t t helping. I think it is safest option for me to involve the banks and let the refund happen via the banking process instead of me refunding the funds on my own. What is the right way to return the funds in this case? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Inform your bank, and then ask the other person to initiate reversal from their end.

Thanks for trying to help. I tried reaching out to my bank’s helpline and I had to speak with bots that don’t seem to understand the situation. I’m unable to get in touch with an actual human.

This actually led me to some progress. After emailing them, they’ve asked me to visit the nearest branch to initiate the refund process to the sender.

Reaching out to your own bank is of no use. OP should ask the remitted to raise a chargeback through his bank.

                    Call that UPI helpline no.

                    That should help.

Thanks, I tried this and they say that the person who did the wrong transaction should approach their bank and then the NCPI portal for resolution. Let us see..

Correct asks them to come through the proper channel. Agencies are not going to listen to these excuses

                              Scam

Once you send it back, they do reversal via bank and amount in your bank account will be put on hold.

Don’t refund directly. Instead, contact your bank immediately with the UPI transaction ID and sender’s details. Banks use NPCI’s formal chargeback process (TCC/RET checks) to reverse transactions without double-dipping risks.

Demand written proof from the sender’s bank (via email) confirming the error. No docs? Stall. Legit cases involve banks/NPCI – not emotional WhatsApp pleas.

This isn’t paranoia – UPI fraud hit a Thousand Cr last year.

Play hardball: “Reverse via banking channels or GTFO.”
