I had borrowed approximately 4 lakhs from a man. At the time, I was unaware of his true character. Recently, he has been accused of sexual harassment and the police have arrested him. The alleged victim in this case is the same person who helped me secure the funding from him.

Currently, Iโ€™m not in a financial position to repay the amount immediately. The accused is attempting to defend himself by claiming that the woman took money from him. In reality, the official transaction was made to her, and she subsequently transferred the funds to me.

I fully intend to repay the amount, but I need some time. Now, the victim and her family is pressurizing me to repay amount in 1-2 day or be present in the police station.

My concern is whether the authorities will demand immediate repayment or hold me accountable in any legal way. How can I protect myself in this situation ? Why would the police need my statement ? Even when the judgement is due to the court. How can I protect myself ?

          Not a lawyer

Get in touch with a proper lawyer in your city and get this clarified.

            As per Indian civil law:

The loan is a civil matter, not a criminal offence, unless fraud or cheating is alleged.

Loan repayment timelines depend on the agreement (oral or written).

There is no criminal liability for not repaying a personal loan unless fraud, cheating, or dishonest intention can be proved.

If they file a civil suit for recovery, the court will allow time to respond and present your case.
