I wanted to share my recent experience at the hospital to raise awareness and seek advice from the community.

I’m writing this behalf of my 73-year-old Grandma who was recently hospitalized due to complications involving a pancreatic mass that caused a blockage of the bile duct. During her stay, while undergoing various treatments including a biliary stent placement, She was also prescribed Ivabradine to manage her heart rate.

The prescribed dose was supposed to be 2.5 mg to 5 mg, as Ivabradine is usually given in very small doses for heart conditions such as angina or heart failure. However, due to what I believe was a serious error, a nurse administered five 5 mg tablets at once β€” totaling 25 mg β€” an extremely high dose for someone of her age and health condition.

I was not informed properly before administration. I trusted the hospital staff to follow the doctor’s orders. Only later did I realize that such a high dose could have caused severe bradycardia (dangerously slow heart rate), hypotension (low blood pressure), and other potentially life-threatening complications. Thankfully, immediate monitoring showed she did not experience catastrophic effects, but it left me shaken, scared, and feeling extremely vulnerable.

The hospital has not formally acknowledged the mistake yet. They brushed it off lightly, but I know that administering a fivefold overdose, especially to an elderly patient with other severe health concerns, is gross negligence.

I am considering filing an official complaint and possibly seeking legal advice, not just for myself but to prevent this from happening to others.

If anyone has been through something similar or has advice on how to proceed legally or medically, I would really appreciate your guidance.

Hi. Advocate practicing in Delhi here. I’d suggest starting with a complaint to the concerned State Medical Council, and if you’re seeking compensation for this harrowing incident, then a consumer complaint as well. These two aren’t mutually exclusive, and can run parallelly.

I would like to file a complaint, but what are the proofs I need to have for submitting the complaint.

Hi. I’m a Delhi based lawyer. Have you sought an opinion of a specific medical practitioner before arriving at that opinion?
