Recently, we vacated a flat in Mumbai. So, we gave off a fridge (single door), sofa-bed, 2 foldable tables (1 big and 1 small), 1 plastic chair, 1 bean bag few days prior. Fridge, bean bag, foldable tables was taken by them via lift on different days.

The supervisor (the glorified security guy who sits at reception) immediately came to our flat the day we gave off fridge and he asked for Rs. 1000/- as lift usage for shifting. He didn’t give any bill. Also, when I told I’ll call the society manager to ask about it, he immediately left. He didn’t disturb afterwards.

Few days after – on the day of shifting, few hrs after handing over the key to the broker, he called me and forced me to pay Rs. 1000/- When I denied telling I won’t pay without any bill, he replied it’s included in maintenance bill. And he was speaking rudely and forcing me to pay.

Also, we have paid shifting charges 3 yrs ago to another supervisor in this building cause he wasn’t allowing me to enter. I’ve never paid money in any of the previous societies I’ve lived in Mumbai and Bangalore.

I haven’t slept, have skipped meals (too fatigued to even get up now) after all these happened. Earlier, another supervisor also tried to scam us for 10k/day (will tell the details, if required).

Since, I’m a woman, these people are speaking rude and is very disrespectful. They are acting superior and is being dismissive of my complaint. I feel super scared right now. I don’t know what to do. I fear they might ask for more money in future. Already, I’m scared for life.

Are you still in this society? Can you check with any neighbors or your owner about the standards practice? If not, how are they reaching you?

I have seen a one-time exit fee (with bill) from the overall a society supervisor once.

          I find some things confusing:
How many supervisors are there in this complex?
What the fuck is a life usage fee, when you were still living there?
Why are you still scared? If you are in a new location, quietly block them. But that is what I would do.
          Who asked that 10k amount?

              I’ve left the society.

I’ve paid in the beginning when a supervisor asked – initially Rs. 500, then again Rs. 500. We used to give money to security people there occasionally. While leaving too, my mother paid the present supervisor few hundreds.

Supervisors change frequently (they’re basically like security people only).
Lift usage fee for giving off fridge to someone. When I told I’ll ask the manager, he left immediately.

10k story – I was in another state for few days. A supervisor then called me to come immediately because he needs to check our flat. He said there is some water issue in the building and he has checked all other flats. He said water is leaking from our flat itself and that we’ll need to pay 10k/day as fine. When I returned immediately, there was neither any water issue nor any tap was open. When I asked him, he said I’ll need to pay cause he didn’t see the flat. Luckily I recorded a video while entering and I spoke to the manager too. That supervisor didn’t stay for long luckily.

No need to give money to them. Now they feel entitled for it and want to extort as much money as possible from you. If they harass you again, just tell them you will file a police complaint.

After hearing the 10k story, well, this is obvious none of this is worth another thought!

I did this last 6 months – block all unknown numbers on Truecaller – you know what I missed out on? Nothing! And this was when I was expecting job offers – I just accepted that I will wait for emails and LinkedIn messages only – there I could control when I opened them.

I would see Delivery missed calls (it gives notifications later) of 13 calls etc., but so what? If you want your MENTAL PEACE, sometimes you have to let go of worrying about the rest of the world. Otherwise, you are no good to others anyways.

Another thing – nobody was rude to me! I remember people who called twice being rude about the address. But when I decided I don’t give a fuck about anyone, suddenly people appeared meeker and gentler. I mean, lol, the way that guy told me – “Sir, I called 13 times”, he was so.. nice – as if he understood – either I am upset and not to be messed with, or if I get upset, I am not to be messed with.

                      On the other question:
That society had both entry and exit fee. It was a little posh, but they always maintained standards in amenities. No such thievery like festival fee, etc.

It’s not just 10k story, there were many other rude supervisors too.

It’s good that you did that. Peace of mind should be the ultimate goal.

Woahh, even if it’s a posh society, it doesn’t make any sense cause owners pay maintenance bill. It is mentioned in agreement too, I think. And lift charges are included in maintenance bill.

Even at many companies, I’ve heard even well qualified people have to pay some money to get job which is illegal. A lot of illegal things are normalised and people tend to target some to loot money by scaring etc.

All these festival charges are asked informally by supervisors / security. Security is mostly nice. Supervisor is just there to scare, tell brokers nearby that our lift bill is pending to insult and acquire money. My mother feared he might take some revenge as I scared him telling I’ll call the manager, so she smiled and gave him money even while leaving. She didn’t even let me call the manager. It’s so hard to live in Mumbai. I can write a lot but this one scared me to the core that I didn’t eat or drink anything and cried the whole night thinking about it.

If you’re completely done with them, just block them. If I were there, I’d have said things that would make sure they never call me again.

What to do if the owner also asks me to pay them after listening to them? He is kind of a person who believes in whatever they say.

One new thing I learnt this year – your past owners don’t need to be happy with you. What’s wrong is wrong. Explain once at max. Then leave him to decide how he wants cheap, lazy, fraud security to feel nice.

There is nothing legal or even transactional happening here. Money is being rained in 500’s to make greedy, undeserving people used to it, feel nice and satisfied.

You’re right. Some of them are greedy. I forgot how much we paid to securities here out of fear. My hindi was a bit weak, so they were taking advantage I think.

OP u have to be a little rude and crazy if you want to survive in Indian cities. Even a bum on street will act rude and try to loot you if you are always nice. Only the very rich surrounded by a shield of servants can afford to be nice and polite here.

I agree with you. I too try to shout but I always use aap, ji etc. even while shouting, so I think it’s a part of the problem too. And since I was a student, they never took me seriously. Usually, I say I’ll call an advocate to scare them but they stopped fearing that too cause I say that all the time.

Donโ€™t pay them anything, itโ€™ll go into their pockets. If youโ€™ve vacated the flat, they wonโ€™t be able to bother you. If they harass you over calls, make a FIR.

Some people are so money minded that they’ll say or do anything for money. Maybe this is why many crimes are happening. Initially, these people will behave decent and kind and will start looting slowly.
