January 31, 2025 at 2:36 pmSo, I(19M) have a dad whose schizophrenia has gotten extremely bad. Till this point, I was mostly ignoring all this, partly because I was living in a hostel, and then my mum was giving him meds but they were homeopathic. So,all that to no avail. It has been 3-4 years at this point. Nothing seems to have changed which doesn’t suprise me at all. I was always against her choosing homeopathy. But she would say it’s cheap and doesn’t have side effects. Another major reason was that my dad is fucking unwilling to accept he has any sort of mental illness. I know many people at this point who had the exact same condition. But all of them got ready to seek help atleast. In my dad’s case, he simply won’t. I think it has gotten that bad that he doesn’t anyone now. I am afraid it might be too late, and if it isn’t already, I think it’s high I did something. Is there anything that can be done? My mum is fucking unable to understand how crucial it is to get him help at the earliest. She’s not seeking private hospitals’ services simply because they’re expensive. Is there anything any NGO or something government facility can do that can help him? Maybe take him to the hospital because he simply won’t go on his own or even if he ask him.

OP
January 31, 2025 at 2:39 pmWe live in Delhi. I felt that was important to tell. Nobody’s willing to do anything. We live in a nuclear family. Do have relatives. Matter of fact, they live in the house exactly behind ours and it’s ours only. But they’re hellbent on declaring him simply “mad” and just that he’s pretending to shirk all responsibilities. But it has been diagnosed that he has schizophrenia only. My mum visited IHBAS and they did say that it’s definitely that. Is there any way we can reach out to someone who can get him there and thereby professional help? -

OP
January 31, 2025 at 2:54 pmIt’s a very common mental illness. 1% of the global population has it actually. I toh feel that most people who have mental illness either have this or OCD. Having said that, I think there’s plenty of info available on YouTube and Google if you really wish to know. My mum educated herself on this matter through YouTube only. More and more people need to know about it. Because patients with this disorder are often suspected of being possessed and what not. I personally wish to start an NGO on mental health awareness or maybe a club one I get into college which I don’t see happening given the kind of things I am witnessing because of his illness everyday now. -

January 31, 2025 at 2:55 pmIt’s better to Google. Don’t put unnecessary stress on OP that he has to describe his father’s condition here. It’s a mental health condition that’s bad…affects people’s condition to think normally. They get hyper and suffers from visual or hearing hallucinations at times.-

January 31, 2025 at 3:28 pmHey buddy , take him to a psychiatrist in AIIMS or safdarjung . It was a dangerous decision to get homeopathy treatment . Please get help before it’s too late . What’s done can’t be reversed because it’s an incurable disease but the condition can be made stable . Book an appointment beforehand through https://ors.gov.in/orsportal/-

February 1, 2025 at 12:39 pmIn our case, our doctor suggested sedating my dad and taking him to the hospital. We didn’t go thru with it since we’re the only people he trusts. Check out my other comment on what helped though.

January 31, 2025 at 4:11 pmItβs part of the disease to not accept that youβre mentally ill. Connect with an actual doctor. If youβre an adult you should speak to a psychiatrist for him and explain everything. Ask the doc if they can prescribe him monthly injections for schizophrenia.-

OP
January 31, 2025 at 4:31 pmI know that and have exhausted myself explaining to her that the fucking sugar pills she’s been giving him and wasting all that money is of no use. She fucking doesn’t get it and rather fights with me. Everything is so bleak. She’s busy fighting with him day and night when he talks shit, which he ofcourse would, given what schizophrenic people usually do. Making others feel sorry for her about how her husband suspects her of unfaithfulness and shit. Schizophrenia is a disease which makes it hard to distinguish whether the person is pretending, or is just like that or if he’s a victim of a mental condition until it gets so worse that it’s obviously a sign of mental illness. But once that happens, I suspect, it’s fucked up the person beyond repair. And hence I am panicking.-

January 31, 2025 at 7:20 pmMy cousin had schizophrenia. You need to educate your father about the disease so he knows he’s hallucinating and may be able to exert some control.
Also. Meds help. They will not cure hum but would definitely help him live a relatively normal life.
There’s also a girl names Cecilia_Mcgough
She has schizophrenia and talks about it and spreads awareness and all. Check her out on insta/youtube.
I genuinely feel if people with schizophrenia can be made self aware there’s a better chance of them being able to handle it.

January 31, 2025 at 7:44 pmWhat did your dad do? Schizophrenia canβt be treated. It can be managed with good psychiatric help. And psychiatrists who are good are tough to find
