January 21, 2025 at 8:12 amI was married to my wife in 2019 and due to social issues Covid and other protests, the court marriage never happened. We tried later to get this registered, but one thing or the other led to delays and eventually, we don’t have a legal marriage document.I have added my wife and daughter as nominees to all my financial documents. How important is the marriage certificate for any of the above or other situations? I would appreciate your feedback.

January 21, 2025 at 8:22 amYou can get a marriage certificate even now. Apply in the appropriate registrar office with proof of your marriage (wedding invitation, photos) and id/address proof. The marriage certificate is needed for endorsing spouse name in passport and they may ask later for nominees too.

January 21, 2025 at 8:25 amNAL.Just some layman’s perspective. It helps when you have to travel overseas and in other situations where you might need to prove your marriage, could possibly complicate inheritance in the future? It’s not hard to get one made, they just need pictures of you as a couple, the wedding card invite and 2 witnesses IIRC. Do check the list once, I’m just sharing what I recall from memory. We got ours made after 7-8 years of getting married because some visa required it.

January 21, 2025 at 8:52 amHave you already added your wife’s name with passport or Aadhaar or any legal identity proof? If not then you need a marriage certificate.
Except travelling abroad, you also need a marriage certificate when you are taking a loan on your wife’s name but you are paying it. As in many cases assets on women’s names attract less charges.. like cars or property.-

January 21, 2025 at 9:06 amThen you don’t need it. Your passport will be sufficient proof of marriage or any proof whatsoever. -
