Is it really necessary to have a Middle in India? I ahave a middle name and obviously it never was a problem for me, but now I am thinking about the next generation (where I would get ro name him/her), do we really need a middle name which is mandated legally in India?

Query is from the perspective of the kid being able to get an admission in school, get all the necessary Ids (Aadhar & PAN, Passport etc.) created.. get ro fly abroad if needed and anything thing else where mentioning the complete name is important.

P.S. We live in Maharashtra, and hence state laws comes in effect as well.

Not sure about the maharashtra specific. But never came across mandatory requirement for middle name anywhere. However we decided to simplify and have only first and last name for kids.

Yeah, many people end up not liking their name being too long.

Nobody in my family except the men or anyone on my mom’s side of the family have middle names. It has caused no issues for us in any form whatsoever. Middle names are an outdated concept in the other parts of india outside South i think.

Oh also my half of my mom’s side is in Mumbai they had no issues during any process

                NAL.

I don’t have a middle name and haven’t had any issues so far with any documents, I’ve also travelled internationally and didn’t have an issue. However, my first name is my initial (south indian thing to put father’s first letter before your name), and for this I’ve had an issue. Plenty of govt documents didn’t accept a single letter as first name or surname and had to get it done via the office. The passport officer looked at me as though my name itself is a single letter and had to get the fully expanded initial (my dad’s name) as surname.

So even if you want to name your child, consider 2 points

Surname – keep it yourself family title or something as that sort to avoid confusion (Gupta, Sharma, etc).
Middle name – if you want to add it, you can. I’ve seen some people add their father’s name as middle name.
First name – Your child’s name.

Please don’t make the mistake of adding initial or surname before your child’s name. (have pointed this out to my parents plenty of times)

I don’t think it’s mandatory anywhere in India, any form I’ve filled, I’ve left it blank and never faced any issue, this applies to bank forms, university forms, etc in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai. Also if it’s not required in passport, I doubt it will be a big issue anywhere else.

I don’t have a middle name. Neither does anyone I know from my generation barring one. Even he doesn’t use his middle name. I haven’t seen any government form which makes it mandatory for middle name. But I don’t live in Maharastra so can’t comment on that aspect.
