EI am 26M , while my parents are looking at match for me for arranged marriage, an influential/political background family noticed my profile and approached us, they moved things very fast, my family visited their house and 2 days later their family visited my house and things started to move very fast, we got engaged in 2 weeks.
After a week, we got a call from the middle man saying the girl family called off the wedding.
The reason they gave to call off the wedding was saying that my mom was rude, my mom is already feeling bad listening to it, entire family blocked contacts of my family and no one spoke to us. Now this influential family is spreading rumours about me and my family, we keep hearing things like we were demanding for dowry and stuff, dowry is not allowed in my community, we never asked/expected any financial help from their family and now they are defaming us, I am lost in this situation to keep my family strong and fight against a influential and political family, please help me with any ideas about how to approach this problem and get it solved -
CYou cannot get any justice against politicians. Just give it some time and everyone will move on from this. No one will remember it ever happened. It just needs some time only.

Defamation laws aren’t easy to use. You have to prove injury to yourself from false statements of others. Defamation can’t be filed on rumors.
To get back to the influential family, you can also start spreading rumors about your father-in-law. You saw him bang the household domestic worker in the kitchen. Or the girl’s brother wanted to give you a BJ. or something like that – something that defames the males of the family. Indian law doesn’t have any protections for males – you can abuse them, spread rumours that they are gay, or crossdress into womens clothing. Sky is the limit basically.

CConsider this situation: the girl might have confessed to her family in the last moment that she loves some guy and will marry only him. Now as the deal with you has to be broken, that family is scrambling to save their face by blaming your side.
Meet them calmly and tell them to stand down. Tell them that you understand that they might have some good reason to do this and you stand with them in this decision. You are not their enemy, you are a considerate friend. Make them understand that they are doing overkill.

SStay away if you are from middle or salary class. They will do all shitting things to save their asses. It happened to one of my friend too who in fact married and got divorced in an year due to in-laws too much interferes every where. When fighting divorce cases, his family got threats and faced lot of rumors about him like he is impotent etc… Powerful People uses these tactics to hide their mistakes and save their asses in Society that they do not have flaws and makes mistakes.

As you are at a young age of 26, it’s natural to feel the urge to react or let ego take over without fully weighing the consequences, even though you’re planning to tackle it legally.
