April 11, 2025 at 6:55 am**I was recording a video in class while my college faculty was taking attendance. The reason I was recording is because proxy attendance is very common — students often say ‘present’ for others who are actually absent, and I wanted to document that.****During the recording, the female faculty member taking attendance appeared in the frame — though only partially and in the far-left corner of the video. Unfortunately, she noticed me recording. She assumed I was intentionally recording her and took me to the HOD, claiming that I was taking pictures and videos of her while she was taking attendance.**
**She accused me of inappropriate behavior, implying that I was recording her specifically and with bad intentions. The HOD scolded me harshly, spoke very disrespectfully, and even threatened me by saying, ‘This comes under cyber crime,’ and, ‘I’m going to file an FIR against you.’ He also told my brother, ‘I’ll hand your brother over to the police.’ Other faculty members standing nearby supported him and said things like, ‘Why don’t you give him to the police?’**
**What’s bothering me more is that many students in my college regularly take photos and record videos in class — including videos where faculty members are visible — and share them with each other. It’s a common thing, yet I’ve been singled out and treated as if I committed a serious crime.**
**I’m really stressed after this incident. I apologized sincerely to all the faculty members involved, but the situation has left me anxious and confused.**
**If anyone can offer legal advice, I’d really appreciate it. Does this actually fall under cyber crime? And if so, what kind of action can be taken against me?**

April 11, 2025 at 7:03 amCome on dude. Stop lying. Who records classmates while attendance to check for proxy? Were you appointed by college for that job? Even the lectures were students once. Stop this cheap behaviour.-

April 12, 2025 at 4:53 amJust because you can’t relate to the intention doesn’t mean it was wrong. Maybe open your mind a bit before saying anything. Its you cheap mindset not mine-

April 12, 2025 at 11:49 amOh sherlock holmes, you are writing in a group where there are grown up not school students. You recorded a video and it is not a public place to show your cinematography skills. You were caught red handed by your classmates and faculty. Mend your behaviour from now on instead of bluffing. You seem to be expecting cinematic ideas to cover you. This is real life not reel life.-

April 12, 2025 at 2:30 pm**Thanks for the drama, but let’s stick to facts. First, recording in class isn’t about ‘cinematography’ or some ‘reel life’ fantasy — students share moments from lectures all the time, whether it’s for notes, fun, or yes, pointing out things like proxy attendance. The video wasn’t focused on anyone, and the faculty member was barely in the corner of the frame.****Second, calling yourself ‘grown-up’ while throwing insults and assumptions at someone without knowing the full story doesn’t really prove your maturity. I wasn’t ‘caught red-handed’ — I was misunderstood, and I clarified and apologized immediately out of respect.**
**So before trying to sound clever with movie references, maybe take a moment to understand what actually happened. Real life also includes being reasonable**

April 12, 2025 at 3:07 pmTake your whataboutery somewhere else. No wonder you received a earful from your faculty.-

April 12, 2025 at 4:51 pmPointing out double standards isn’t whataboutery — it’s called context. I took responsibility where needed, but I won’t stay quiet while people twist facts just to sound clever. If you’re only here for jabs, feel free to scroll past-

April 13, 2025 at 2:09 amIf you are really a good student who is checking to proxy your faculty and principal would have not called you out. Saying it again, stop fooling even after being caught red handed. Go back to studies.-

April 13, 2025 at 4:36 amBeing misunderstood doesn’t make me guilty, and repeating the same accusation doesn’t make it true. I’ve already explained the context and taken accountability where needed — I don’t need validation from someone who’s clearly more interested in arguing than understanding. I’ll get back to my studies — you should try getting back to common sense-

April 11, 2025 at 7:10 amHi. I’m a lawyer here. We’re living in really sensitive times buddy. And if you’re unlucky, anything will get escalated to any extent. So while taking such risks, imagine the worst and don’t use similarly placed people as your role models. Not everything should be learnt the hard way. -

April 12, 2025 at 5:01 pmthis whole situation has been blown way out of proportion.1. **The Recording**:
– You were recording because **proxy attendance** is a thing in your college, and you wanted to document it. Fine, I get that. You’re not the first student to think of doing that.
– The **faculty member** appearing in the video was barely in the frame, and it’s not like you were targeting her. She jumped to conclusions, which is **her problem**, not yours.2. **The HOD’s Overreaction**:
– So the HOD flips out and goes straight to “cyber crime” and “FIR.” **Really?** That’s an overreaction of the highest order. The guy basically acted like you were trying to film a Hollywood movie or something. Recording videos in class isn’t automatically a crime unless you’re violating someone’s privacy or doing it with **malicious intent** – which you clearly weren’t.
– Yes, you **apologized**, and you should’ve. It’s always better to calm the situation down. But let’s be real, the HOD is just using this to flex power, not because you actually did something criminal.3. **The Hypocrisy**:
– Here’s the kicker: **students in your class** are doing this all the time – recording, sharing videos, even when faculty members are visible. But **you’re the one who’s singled out**? Why? Because the teacher got *personal* and assumed you were recording her with bad intentions. That’s just plain unfair and clearly shows some **double standards** at play.4. **Does this fall under Cyber Crime?**
– **Short answer: No.**
– **Long answer:** This doesn’t fit the definition of **cyber crime** unless you did something malicious, like sharing the video inappropriately or using it to harass or defame. Recording a video in class, especially when it’s not focused on anyone in particular, **is not a crime**. **If anything**, you could argue it’s a case of **privacy violation** if you were focusing on someone without their consent, but this wasn’t the case.
– If they threaten you with legal action, **don’t panic**. You’ve already **apologized**. If they try to escalate things, you’ll deal with it calmly and let your lawyer handle it.5. **What Can You Do Now?**
– First, keep your **head down** and let the heat die down. The fact that you’ve apologized means they’re not going to do much unless they’re **completely unreasonable**.
– If they try to file an FIR, **talk to a lawyer**. It’s important to get professional advice, but trust me, **this is not a serious criminal case**.
– **Document everything**: The apology, the video, the threats from the HOD – keep track of what’s happening in case it escalates.6. **The Bigger Picture**:
– You made a **mistake** by recording without fully understanding the potential consequences, but you didn’t **intend** to do anything wrong. The HOD and faculty overreacted, and this has spiraled out of control because of their **over-inflated egos**.
– It’s not about whether you can “relate to the intention” – it’s about the fact that **you weren’t doing anything criminal**. You were trying to document something that’s **happening all around you** in a place where proxy attendance is common.– **Stay calm**. You apologized, and you’ve done your part to clear the air. The HOD and faculty need to chill out and realize that **recording a video** isn’t a crime.
– **If they escalate things** beyond this, handle it legally, but **don’t worry about an FIR**. This is not a situation where you should panic.
– You’ve got a valid point about **double standards** – the others doing the same thing and nothing happening to them. That’s something you should definitely call out if this keeps dragging on.In short, **you’ve done nothing wrong** here except for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Let them vent, but **keep it legal**, and don’t let this blow up more than it needs to.
