I am 18 years old. I will be starting my CS engineering in about 2 months and for it, I will be needing a laptop. I asked them many times, but everytime they said ‘no’. I have to get it on my own now, without their financial help. How can I do it, what are my options? Currently I do not have any source of income.

Almost all of the good engineering colleges in this country have decent computer labs, so you can manage with that for the initial period. Then try to save money by doing gig work, freelance work, or whatever else you can find.

Search in your city , you can easily get second hand laptop from shop in cheaper price. Try buying low end initially.

You can get a Second hand or Third hand one.
If you want to do heavy tasks, install chrome OS or Linux.
If you want to Game you can use GeForce cloud platform. But gaming is the later part,
Get the laptop, learn some skills, find some internships . Gain experience and earn money.

My friend did the same, he got an old laptop (i7 8th Gen). He learnt kotlin and started as app dev intern for free. 1½ years later, now he has a Hp pavillion x360 i5 12th Gen.
He doesn’t game so he didn’t go for gaming laptops, but the thing is you can earn.

Alternative, use your univ’s computer labs or ask a friend out.

you can buy pre owned corporate laptops that are sold at auctions for very cheap price. wont be able to help you source them but just search about this topic on google and reddit

You need laptop from 2nd year. 1st year you can manage through phone and books. Read more and more books. Roke ku6 fayda nahi hae abhi. Write code with pen and paper.

Two questions. Do you have a PC at home? Is it mandatory for students to carry their own laptops to college?

If you have a PC at home and college doesn’t insist on students having their personal laptop. You don’t need one.

Don’t waste your parents money, i did the same during my engineering days and I still regret it.

You don’t need a laptop in the early years of engineering.

For the smaller assignments in those years, ask help from friends.

What I have seen is students buy laptops in the name of CS and then use it mostly for playing games. A total waste of money.

There is no point of buying a laptop right now, as it might be a waste of money if that doesn’t align with the role you want to pursue in future. Till then you can rent out a laptop which you can afford from your pocket money. Starting your 3rd year, you will have an idea of which role which you want to pursue and then buy a laptop that suits it. Meanwhile you can also earn money for the laptop, through internships or other ways.
