March 20, 2025 at 1:11 pmHello, my baby’s due in a few months. My husband aadhar/10th class all have 3 names – first name, community name as middle name and family name as surname. For personal but extremely important reasons, we wish to have either my husband’s first name or community name or maybe both in my baby’s legal documents skipping his family name. But then both their surnames wouldn’t match. Will skipping the family name in certificates/legal docs create any legal issues for the baby’s future? Just to clarify we are happily married. And we are Hindu. Please give us clarity on this. Thanks a lot -

March 20, 2025 at 1:38 pmI think you can ask this on city subs like r/hyderabad or r/chennai. These kind of names are common among the Telugus, as far as I’m aware.

March 20, 2025 at 1:36 pmYou can name your child whatever you wish to. We (my husband, kids and I) all have different surnames. Itโs not an issue at all.-

March 20, 2025 at 1:42 pmIsn’t it weird.. people cannot associate the family together?
Family name is something that shows that certain people r associated.-

March 20, 2025 at 1:53 pmOh no, no offense taken. In my community, the surname of the child is the middle name (baptism name) of the father. So that means that the father and children will have e different surnames. And my surname is different as I chose to not change my name.

March 20, 2025 at 2:22 pmIt is common in the south to kept the father’s name as the kids surname. There is no family name as such -

March 20, 2025 at 1:51 pmThat’s a relief to hear. So your kids didn’t share your husband’s surname?-

March 20, 2025 at 2:00 pmThatโs right. In my culture, itโs the fatherโs baptism name (middle name) that is used as a surname for the children.
But we didnโt follow that and chose to use my husbandโs first name instead as the kidsโ surname. Just proves that none of it matters. Go ahead and name your child whatever you wish.

March 20, 2025 at 2:30 pmIt’s widely followed practice all over India except couple of South Indian state. It’s always better to go with majority.-

March 20, 2025 at 2:40 pmIt is followed in Gujarat and Maharashtra predominantly. Rest of North Indian states donโt go with a middle name

March 20, 2025 at 2:38 pmMy last name is my dad’s first name. Yes, I am a South Indian. There is no any restriction and/or rule to follow the father’s surname as the baby’s surname. As some one suggested to follow the widely used practice / the one used in North India – ignore them. Go with your approach

March 20, 2025 at 4:40 pmMy surname is our family gotra and doesnโt match my dadโs or momโs surname. Never had any problems getting passport/Aadhaar or anything but teachers in school would ask sometimes. It was an easy explanation, never had any issues as such. -

March 20, 2025 at 4:52 pmNothing related to legal stuff. This is just something I really liked as it breaks caste identity.During my stay in Europe, I discovered their child naming tradition, which is similar to south india.
The last name of children is based on father’s name and “ova” or “ov” is added based on the gender. Showing who’s the father of the child. No other family running titles.
Let’s say “Ivan” has 2 children, a girl and a boy from his partner, whom he names “Anastasia” and “Olexii”. The girl will have complete name as “Anastasia Ivanova”, whereas the boy carries the name “Olexii Ivanov”.

March 20, 2025 at 8:50 pmIf what you are said is a concern, that would have been a problem for like 70% Mallus.Other than people who choose to keep caste names, most Mallus don’t have common last names with their parents since people get their fathers first name as last name. Christians tend to have a “biblical” middle name too.

March 21, 2025 at 4:22 amBoth me and my sister use our mother’s surname instead of our father and its hasn’t caused any problems till now except for some people assuming and putting down my surname as my father’s which we had to get changed. We are from UP if that matters since for some reason everyone is from south india in the comments lol
