Two apartment associations in Indiranagar have completely encroached upon a BBMP-owned public road. This is a dead-end road that connects only to two apartment buildings and a church, but it is officially public property—BBMP has installed a road sign at the entrance and even recently completed white-topping work here.

Until recently, residents from nearby areas (not just from these apartments) regularly used this road for walking—especially dog walking—and the open space was often used by taxis and autos to park without obstructing traffic.

Shockingly, after BBMP improved the road, the two apartment associations illegally installed a gate across the entire road and put up a board that says:
“Access Restricted to Residents & Guests of [Apartment Names] and Church Visitors Only.”

This is blatant misuse and illegal restriction of a public road maintained by BBMP.
Such a move limits access to common citizens and sets a dangerous precedent of privatizing public infrastructure for private benefit.

I’m unsure how to escalate this legally, so I am asking here what can I do to stop this encroachment, kindly let me know what to do.

        Also, I’m hoping this reaches:

        Civic activists
        Urban planning NGOs
Journalists/media who report on urban issues
Concerned citizens and authorities in Bangalore
If anyone is able to take this up, raise awareness, or direct this to the right people within BBMP or any concerned atoroties, please do. I’m happy to share more details if needed.

Check with the local ward office, meet the officer in-charge.. Go with photos and ask if this is legal.. ideally it’s them who need to take action.. this is a civil matter..

Is the road a dead end? Does the barrier prevent people from going from point A to B ?

              Ok, I’ll look into that.

Is the road a dead end? Yes, only destination for these roads are these two apartments and a church

Does the barrier prevent people from going from point A to B ? As I said it’s dead end road so, one cannot go anywhere except to these tow apartments and the church, but I don’t how that would allow these two apartment associations can put up a board that say *’Access is restricted to only these apartments and the church’* considering it is a BBMP road and they are the one who maintaining it.

Thought we much. Had seen a similar case in Mumbai. Though technically illegal, the RWA put pressure on the ward office making a case for them blocking as
                  a. It was a dead end
                  b. they alleged autos and cars used the dead end to park sleep / drink and they were safeguarding the residents from shady folks

The municipal office looked the other way as the dead end meant, no road was being blocked.

                      Well this is not Mumbai.

First of all, why would they buy a house when that road exist if the want to safe guard the residents from shady people?

Outside People park their cars, drink, sleep in public roads, what’s these people problem? These are not the only associations in Bangalore like this, why should it be allowed to only two of apartments. what if independent houses with dead end roads demand the same everywhere.

It’s completely illegal plain and simple, if somehow they got the permission from BBMP, they should put it out in the public infront of the gate. We don’t know whether they have taken permission or not

You aren’t wrong for being upset, neither what they have done is legal but reality is always grey. I categorically don’t agree with the solution of barricading but neither would i want shady people drinking, making out in my lane where kids, senior citizens and others walk..

If i am not wrong, someone politically influential probably stays in one of those two apartments or maybe the church folks ..
