April 10, 2025 at 8:05 pmIt was around 1:00 AM in the morning, and we were in an emergency—someone in our family needed to be taken to the hospital urgently. We rushed to find a petrol pump because our vehicle was low on fuel. To our shock, every petrol pump we visited in Raipur, Chhattisgarh was closed. We pleaded for help, explaining the urgency of the situation, but the staff refused, saying, “Petrol is not given after 12 AM midnight.”
We understand rules and timings, but what about emergency situations like this? Isn’t there supposed to be some provision for medical emergencies? In a city like Raipur, it’s deeply concerning that there’s no 24/7 petrol pump service even for critical needs.
What are the official rules in such cases? Is it legal for petrol pumps to refuse service in an emergency? We’re hoping someone looks into this because a delay in medical help can cost lives.

April 10, 2025 at 8:19 pmI am not sure why this is in legal sub. Send email to companies like Indian Oil, HP etc. and ask for clarification. -

April 10, 2025 at 8:53 pmhttps://www.google.com/search?q=24+hour+petrol+pump+raipurNext time, call an ambulance. Or even a cab. Or ensure you have some petrol at least.
I am sure it would’ve been faster than you going around every petrol pump in the area.

April 11, 2025 at 2:29 amUnderstood ur question, it’s weird tat staff are still present that time I’m in a metro city and petrol bunks will be closed by 11 itself. Only a security guard will be there to protect it.
Acc to me, why there is no laws about 24/7… As others its a private entity so they can close anytime they want, how many ppl u think will buy petrol at midnite ?? During emergency ppl are advised to call ambulance only cos they can give first aid while traveling… And there will be no medical shops after 11, do u want them to work as well.
It’s sorry to know that you were in a difficult situation but petrol bunk and medical shop workers are ppl like u & me only they want to rest and sleep at their home like u …
Nite time u faced some emergency so u went to petrol bunk but previously how many times did u visit a petrol bunk after midnight to refill ur vehicle ? Or did u sleep at home and postponed it to tomorr mng time …. Hope it answers ur question -

April 11, 2025 at 2:34 amThe staff refused petrol, because they “couldn’t” even if they wanted to.Shut down times are reserved for refilling the tank, density checks and routine maintenance. Things that cannot be done when the Petrol Pump is in service and there are people around.
There’s a lot of safety hazards when certain maintenance services are carried out as well.
The staff you met weren’t there to serve petrol, they were skeleton staff probably waiting for the arrival of the refilling tankers so they can assist. Then go to sleep. The pumps were off from the main backend centre after shutdown (as is the norm for when the tank is refilled).

You’re getting mad about the wrong things. Petrol Pumps are called “Retail Outlets” and donot come under emergency services. Not just in India, but everywhere.
They provide fuelling services to private emergency vehicles, but these vehicles have daily/alternate day refuelling slots. Often in less busy times.
There are petrol pumps that work 24/7 – but it’s a personal choice by the owners and management. Based on the traffic and footfall.

When dealing with an emergency,
“OMG, xxx had a heart attack. Let’s rush him to the hospital!!!!”
“Oh fuck! My car has no petrol”.
There are so many options to the above scenario, like calling an ambulance, taking a neighbour’s/friend’s/relative’s car, calling a cab, calling any local mode of transport.
None of the options are “Oh yes, let’s fill petrol first!”

April 10, 2025 at 9:08 pmThey are private entities and can close when they want. You should have had reserve petrol, you cheaped out and are blaming pumps. U could have also easily called out an ambulance or friends. -
