Context: im an indian international student getting his passport for the first time, for privacy reasons (**John .P**) is how my name looks like and **P** standing for my fathers name which in this example can be (**Parker**)

My aadar, marksheet and bank passbook name is as **John P**

1)First question, since initials aren’t allowed, do i expand my fathers name as parker when filling out my name?(im not too sure because all my documents dont have expanded version of my name)

Second, this is the standard naming convention i saw online on how to convert names (might be wrong so pls correct if it is)

        First name- given name
        Father’s name-middle name
        Family name- surname

        2) So by this standard, am i to write Parker (if i was to expand it) as my middle name or surname?

it should be considered as a middle name but that leaves without surname which is infinety worse for multiple reason,

2.1)follow up question i wanted to ask if i can write my fathers name as my surname since on a technicality wise since he is the caretaker of our family?

Pls clarify this doubt and if u have personally faced this issue yourself, feel free to tell how u fixed this problem in

Yes. They will ask you to expand what ever initials there are in the documents you submit when you fill the form.

Hi, I faced the same problem when applying. I have put my father’s name as surname. I have travelled abroad once and haven’t faced any issues.

You are right. A lot of universities ask for a mandatory surname, whereas middle name is optional.

Please note, I’m not a lawyer and don’t know the legal repercussions of this.

thanks, mate, I’m just very confused about the process, and a lot of people emphasized it a lot on the naming part of the passport, thanks for sharing your experience
