My girlfriend’s mother strongly dislikes me because of my religion and has threatened to file police complaints and legal cases against me if I continue talking to her.

Both my girlfriend and I want to get married and are determined to find a way to do so in the upcoming year. However, I am concerned about whether she can actually file a case against me just for talking to her.

Legally speaking, simply talking to another person—especially with mutual consent—is not a crime. The Constitution of India guarantees my Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression (Article 19(1)(a)) and Right to Personal Liberty (Article 21). Unless my conversation involves threats, harassment, coercion, or any illegal activity, no police complaint should hold legal merit.

So my question is that can the mother do anything legally to harm me?

No she cannot do anything to harass you. She might file false cases which might lead the police to investigate you but be aware of your rights as a citizen

Or

Has parents or family connections to influential or powerful

then yes you are screwed

Depends most of the times people don’t have good relationship with their brothers if in case your gf s father has a good relationship with his brother then yes you are screwed asf

SP have huge powerful connections so whatever you do be cautious

Also is your gf under 18?

I am so sorry that this country is going through a shit show right now and in a circumstance like this yes it will get really tricky.

You need to make sure you marry in a non religious way and take happy pictures of both of you while and after it and then just go away for a while.

Or marry in both religious ways and take enough pictures to keep as a proof of consensual marriage

Provided you are both adults and you both are actually in love and won’t make false accusations against each other, there is nothing anyone can do about it. Your parents, her parents, SP, CM, PM, it doesn’t matter. You are an adult Indian citizen and are fully within your rights to fall in love and stay with another consenting adult.

Getting married is usually a good idea for interfaith and intercaste couples. If you’re not, keep a lawyer’s number handy to quickly step in for any false cases filed by her family.

Most common ones are kidnapping, fraud and rape. These are easily defendable if your girlfriend/wife is willing to say on affidavit that it is her decision to be with you.

Record a video and keep it on each other’s phones. Let it be just the person taking the video, showing the room around them and that they are alone, then say for the record that you are doing this with your full and free consent and this is your decision. This will help you quickly clarify things to police if needed.
