WI have a bank account with SBI, my account is blocked as its past kyc, they want me to perform the e-kyc online or to visit the branch. Not to disturb SBI ppl, I though of doing it online and was astonished to find that they are asking religion and category as mandatory fields.
I would like to know Y should the bank has to know to which religion & category (General/SC/ST/OBC) I belong?
I haven’t availed any loans/credit cards from the bank. I just have a normal account with them.
Can someone in legal background through some light here. -

PGovernment roles out doles, so bank would need to know about caste and religion.
Speak with any bank manager, region manager, they will be bombarded with Rbi orders and government ordinances and orders on frequent rule changes. Deposit rate changes. Dole schemes for weaker sections.
Banks also claim credit, saying they helped open bank accounts to marginalised sections. Some government schemes are really helpful for communities, but bank managers do not inform their account holders of these schemes, since it would put burden of risky debt on their terms.

UThe data is required as per CKYC data guidelines. We verify the same during audit.
SBI, being the premier Bank, has the responsibility to ensure its data is as per RBI regulations. Any deviation, when pointed out publicly, would create a negative impression of Bank which is not suitable. Private sector Banks, are less susceptible to such negative impressions.

WAs far as I’m aware of ckyc/RBl regulation on KYC AML doesn’t specify to identify/classify the individual based on religion and category.
If you could share the guidelines where the regulator specifies the banks need to collect these data points it would be of great help to me. -
