Let’s say someone caught an aquatic turtle near a Lake and kept it as pet. Will that person be jailed?

What to do in case someone is in this situation?

NAL. Some tortoises and turtles are classified as endangered and/or protected. They cannot be kept as pets. Others might be fine. It is difficult to determine unless we know whether the exact species is allowed or not. Hence it is risky to keep it as a pet

Indian Flapshell is a Schedule I protected species according to the Wild Protection Act.

I have a persian cat, for a year now, he is very comfortable at home, eats special food, sleeps almost whole day, have fun in open terrace garden.

That’s a domesticated animal, that too a pedigree breed. You know the answer, and you know the difference. If you really don’t, you have bigger issues that you need to focus upon.

The turtle was near a lake because it is its home. I hope the person who picked up the turtle is picked up from his home and put inside a jail.

I have Indian Roof Turtle for almost 5 years now. Illegal to keep it as a pet though I don’t think they would do anything serious unless your pet is a danger to other’s life or is extremely rare or might not be suitable for an aquarium

As a blanket rule indian doesn’t allow animals as pets except for some species of fish, dogs, cats and small rodents and that too requires a registration with municipality.

You can’t keep any birds or any other type of animal at home as a general rule.

The regulation is really implemented if someone files a complaint or you end up visiting a Vet for your pet.

The issue is also lack of knowledge in how to raise a turtle/tortoise or other animals and lack of medical infrastructure in India for it.

I wont talk about legal illegal but is it morally right thing to do? A creature belongs to nature, no animals love to be in a concert jungle, except those domesticated animals like dog or cat or cow. But apart from that, keeping an animal just because you love to is selfishness.

I live a costal area, there are tortoise turtles everywhere and I use to think to keep one or two but never did that.

Wild animals looks great in their natural habitat, this is where they belong

You are right. I made a mistake and i corrected it. I released the turtle back to the lake. Back to its home to be specific.

There was someone in Nani’s apartment complex raising 4-5 tiny baby ones. Either they were doing it illegally or has to take special permission for it I don’t remember what it was it has been over a decade

they most probably u have is softshell turtle , can be easily identified by its pig like nose is illegal to pet , and if even u defying laws keep it it will die after approx 2 years , so for the sake of thaat smol shell leave it in the pond plaese 🙏🏿
