Yesterday, a couple disembarking at Hazrat Nizamuddin station after a long journey was assaulted by a platform TC (ticket checker), who then proceeded to arrest the man by dragging him to the railway police station by his crotch and collar ([original post](https://www.reddit.com/r/indianrailways/comments/1i112pd/railway_staff_beats_up_a_couple_demands_money/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)). The provocation for the assault and abuse was the passenger asking for the TC’s name and ID and the purpose of stopping him. The TC never revealed his identity, declared the luggage overweight (without weighing it) by 23 kg (fined β‚Ή87), and fined β‚Ή1738 for carrying a computer (without opening any luggage and verifying). The couple claims that their luggage weighed ~135 kg in total, including handbags, and one of the bags contained dismantled parts of their personal computer. The luggage was weighed before starting their train journey.

What are the roles and responsibilities of a TC? Do they have the power to arrest and drag passengers to the police station? Can they fine the passengers for luggage in this manner at the destination station?

NAL. Obviously not. Just a feature of public owned companies to treat users as if doing a favour. Yet most Indians don’t want privatisation of these public companies.

Lawyers can chip in with meaningful legal recourse, if any. Most likely there won’t be any and the victim will be denied justice. Welcome to India.

Both the passengers and TC are entitled assholes.

Passengers for complaining about tickets being already checked and not paying extra for the luggage.

TC for not presenting his ID.

Good to know. Try travelling in a train where unreserved passengers enter and sit in the seat you paid for .. then you’ll realise
