March 5, 2025 at 11:53 amI’m a fourth-semester law student in my second year of a 5-year LLB program. Recently, I got an internship opportunity with a well-known law firm in their IP team, and I was really excited about it.However, when I shared the news with my friend, she advised me against it, saying that IP law is new and doesn’t have much of a future. She got this information from her senior boyfriend, and since then, I’ve been hearing mixed opinions on the subject.
I’m about to start my third year and want to focus on building my CV in one specific field. Can anyone share insights on whether IP law has a good future? Would it be a smart career choice?
Would love to hear your thoughts!

March 5, 2025 at 12:10 pmGo for the internship, don’t listen to anyone. Try it out and if you don’t like it then decide for yourself. Especially in your third year, you should explore your options without any preconceived notions.IP law has a future as long as business exists. So don’t worry about that, if you’re interested in it go for it.

March 5, 2025 at 12:29 pmWhile it is possible to have a good and fulfilling career in IP, I wouldn’t recommend building your specialisation in a core IP practice, unless it’s something that you’re terribly interested in.A lot of IP work can be repetitive and mindless, especially in trade marks. Copyright isn’t enough to build a whole career on, but is a useful skill to have in other fields, like TMT. Patents is already kinda saturated with people who have engineering / science degrees on top of their law degrees and just understand inventions better than you would, without years of experience. IP litigation across all of the above is pretty good if you’re working for a specialist firm like Anand & Anand, Remfry & Sagar, etc.
From an experience perspective, working for the IP team at a well-known law firm might not be as good as working for a well-known IP firm.
That being said, do not feel disheartened and go for the internship. You still have plenty of time to figure out your niche and at this point, it will only broaden your horizons, not restrict them.

March 5, 2025 at 1:22 pmIntellectual Property Rights (IPR) law is a continuously evolving field with lots of future potential, but the quantity and quality of cases that you may get in IPR depends on the city in which you are located. For instance, Tier 2 or 3 cities may not offer decent opportunities for IPR practitioners. Conversely, Tier 1 cities or cities with High Courts generally have a high demand for IPR lawyers. -

March 5, 2025 at 1:24 pmOkay it is one thing to receive bad advice and you know what is worse than that? Following it.Please go ahead with your internship. Try IP out. Whoever said IP has no future obviously has no fucking clue about how vigorously companies protect their IP.
Please don’t listen to fools and ‘senior boyfriends’. That really should not be the place where you get guidance. Clearly this friend and her senior boyfriend are living in a cocoon and have no idea about what is happening in courts and the real world.
If you doubt what I am saying, open LiveLaw and see how many reported judgements are all IP related.
Especially now with the advent of AI, IP is getting all the more interesting and sought after.
