March 7, 2025 at 10:33 amHello,I am seeking legal advice on behalf of a friend regarding interfaith marriage and residency in India.
Background:
Groom: Muslim man, Indian citizen, worked abroad, now returned to India intending to settle.
Bride: Christian woman, Pakistani citizen.
They wish to marry and reside together in India.Specific Questions:
What is the legal process for their interfaith marriage in India?
What visa or residency options are available for the bride post-marriage?
Are there potential legal challenges they should anticipate?
Would obtaining legal counsel be advisable in this scenario? If yes, please feel free to share any contacts of attorneys that have expertise in this field, thank you
Any guidance or experiences shared would be greatly appreciated.Thank you.

March 7, 2025 at 10:42 amI don’t think there’s much of a legal challenge. I had heard of someone in my town that had married a guy from Pakistan and when he and his family visited India to meet her family their movements were restricted. They weren’t allowed to go to many places. Had to stay within within some specified regions or so. They’re residing in UAE and intending to settle there.
Your friend might have more leeway in that because they both plan to reside in India.
Do get a lawyer that is experienced in such matters involved. -

March 7, 2025 at 11:18 amIf either one is not converting then you need to register the marriage under Special Marriage Act. Please bear in mind that relatives of the bride may not be able to attend the wedding in India because of visa issues. The Pakistani wife will be on long term visa, which may not lead to citizenship even after 10 years. -
