January 16, 2025 at 6:34 amNot exactly Legal, but I guess this is an apt subreddit to post on.I was issued a new passport in Karnataka a few years back, when I became a major. I have the new passport intact and have traveled with it without problems.
However, my old expired passport cannot be found. I will be going abroad (EU/USA) for my higher studies, and have heard that we are required to produce our old passport too for VISA purposes. I have a soft copy of the details page of my old passport, but that’s about it. A quick google search says I must file a police complaint, but looking for clearer advice before I proceed.

January 16, 2025 at 7:27 amFile a police report and keep the original police report with you. Do not give it to anyone (visa application, residency application or passport application). Only submit a color copy.-

January 16, 2025 at 8:55 amNo because your current passport is not lost. When you go to renew the current passport, they stamp it as cancelled and issue you a new one. They don’t ask for all the previous passports. Show this police report only at places where they ask for all previous passports (some embassies ask for it at the time of visa application). But it’s important to file a police report so that you have a record of the loss just in case anyone tries to misuse it.
