March 8, 2025 at 4:13 pmMy 59-year-old mother, a state government employee, made a mistake that led to a tragic loss of life. As a consequence, she was denied promotion, which impacts her final salary, pension, and settlement.A corrupt colleague misguided her, convincing her that bribing officials would get the case dismissed. She ended up paying 55 lakhs, giving 3 lakhs at each stage, believing she had no choice but to continue. All payments were made through bank transactions.
She hid this from me, and I recently found out. There’s still no final verdict, and she is devastated, even talking about suicide. I feel lost and helpless.
If the outcome isn’t favorable, can we take legal action to expose the government officials who accepted bribes and demand the money back? What are our options? Please guide me.

March 8, 2025 at 4:19 pmYou will not be able to get the money back legally. You can report the corruption though. But please note that while accepting a bribe is a crime, so is paying one.-

March 8, 2025 at 4:32 pmWhere did she get the 55 lakh from? Was she taking bribes herself? That amount of money is something people don’t just have lying around.-

March 8, 2025 at 4:38 pmShe is 59 years old. People accumulate 55 lac over a lifetime. Not a big amount.-

March 8, 2025 at 4:41 pmBig for a clean government servant. Even today the salaries of absolutely the highest officers are 3-4 lpm. And OPs mom was a state officer, where it maxes out at 2-2.5lpm. Must have been around 50k-79k most of her career. People won’t spend all their life’s savings in bribes.-

March 8, 2025 at 6:35 pmGet your story straight, either it’s from your father’s savings and retirement fund or it’s from selling property. And stop disclosing all the details here and it can come bite u in actual leagal proceeding, first of all lawyer up and file an fir followed by reaching out to CBI. It’s going to very challenging and political swamp of nastiness

March 8, 2025 at 5:18 pmYour arguments are quite nonsensical. Yes she has made a mistake now but that doesn’t mean her wealth was ill gotten in the first place. She very likely has a lot more saved up. People end up with crores of Rs in their GPF. If they are saving even half as much in FDs, that adds up to a lot.

March 8, 2025 at 5:20 pmOkay. That’s doesn’t change the fact they spent 55L
Liquidating family assets. Not very smart unless they were expecting 2-3cr at a minimum.-

March 8, 2025 at 6:08 pmErr if you hadn’t noticed, there is a disciplinary action going on against her and she could lose her entire pension, or a significant enough chunk. I’m not sure you realise what is at stake here.

March 9, 2025 at 7:56 amMy mother worked in a nationalized bank for 22 years. By the time she took voluntary retirement at the age of 55, she personally had > 3 crores in assets, most of them due to 30x appreciation in the Indian stock market from early 1990s to 2020 as well as 20x increase in Mumbai and Pune real estate prices in the same period.Anyone who entered in a well paying job in late 80s and invested wisely in stock markets and real estate is a multiple-time crorepati by now. In may areas, homes you bought for 1.5 lacs back in 1990 are now worth 1.5 crores easily.

March 8, 2025 at 5:13 pmA clean employee can very easily save up a lot more than that. Corrupt ones could have properties worth tens of crores.Govt employees (atleast upto mid level) tend to live simpler lives while being on decent salaries, they live in govt colonies and get support for childrens education and healthcare, and also some travelling, there is none of that partying and money burning that happens in the case of young IT employees. There’s a lot of savings. Once they buy a house or two, the rest goes into FDs or other liquid instruments.
How the hell does one go through 30-40 years of service in a decent position, earning a good salary and not save up that much? Those in the 50s today have enjoyed a golden run in particular. Joined service in the 90s, got benefits of the 5th, 6th and 7th CPCs and could get the 8th now.

March 8, 2025 at 5:18 pmThe real changes started happening only in the late 2000s and early 2010s. State employees have been paid lesser vs central employees. Unless you are a gazetted officer grade, you were taking less than 1.5 lpm till very recently.-

March 8, 2025 at 5:29 pmUntil very recently, Rs.1.5 lpm was an absolutely humoungous amount of money too. Growing up in the 2000s we used to think 50k a month was huge.
There wasn’t any of that lifestyle creep that we have today. Holidays meant going to hometown or somewhere in India on LTC. The family car (if any) was a Wagon R/Alto.To add to it, this is a woman employee. It is likely her husband was working in a similar or higher paying govt/private job. Atleast from my experience, women employees from that era tended to save almost all of their salaries. FDs were the intstrument of choice but the more adveturous ones put some in mutual funds and got even more gains.

March 8, 2025 at 8:48 pmIts probably from bribes otherwise it is pretty stupid to sink that much money into bribes. She was either taking bribes before this and intended to continue or she intended to start taking bribes to recover this money.
This is like a thief crying that someone stole the money that they stole.

March 8, 2025 at 6:25 pmGood!, Why didn’t your mother consult a lawyer specialist in service issue? If those proceeding were criminal, she would be right to fear a jail sentence. One could even rationalise bribery in exchange of freedom. In departmental proceedings in the extreme circumstances she would dismissed without pension , gratuity and leave pay but would eligible for provident savings. Even this dismissal can challenged in court. One final point, Has department provided your mother with chargesheet detailing her issues for which she is being investigated? If not they are not even conducting departmental proceedings and are just extorting your fearful mother. Tell your mother her situation is manageable. She can win.Are you from Tamil Nadu?

Your problem made people ask you more questions. Also if your mom was officially on leave why she is paying bribe. The person who is incharge should be held accountable. There is something fishy about it

She is a criminal and should be in jail alongwith everyone who accepted her bribes.
