March 3, 2025 at 1:35 pmMy daughter is 3 years old. Her name in Birth certificate is like SB.Karthika Priya (say) where S and B are first letter from my name and my wife’s name. I haven’t applied for aadhaar or any other document yet. I have applied passport for her recently and i filled given name as “Karthika Priya” and Surname as “SB”. But in passport office they told that we cannot have surname like this and they updated it to as belowGiven Name : Karthika Priya
Surname: Sxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Bxxxxxxxxx (which is expansion of our name which is 30 characters) πI asked them to update Karthika as first name and Priya as last name which they told not possible.
I do not want to trouble my daughter unnecessary struggles and irritations with such long name in future with officials documents and during travelling outside india.
What would be correct way to proceed further before she starts her schooling and before i apply passport. I just want her name to be normal and manageable in passport and other docs.
Thinking of her facing unnecessary issues in future is distressing me. Any help / advice would be great.

March 3, 2025 at 1:48 pmHow did they even allow 2 different names, I do not follow. Also is it a common practice among people of your community to name children like this? Or was it something you guys came up with? I am seeing this for the 1st time and I’m curious about it.

March 3, 2025 at 1:55 pmItβs not really a problem to have a long name. I have a friend with 2 given names and 3 surnames. He has traveled with me to 15 odd countries and we never had any issues. I myself have 2 given names and my fatherβs name in the surname and never had any issue-

March 3, 2025 at 2:24 pmThis relaxes me a lot π Thanks for the reply.Still i have a thought to know the procedure a way to avoid this, As we are yet to get any official documents for her yet and getting it corrected and settled before her schooling will be a good.
I am having a thought that she might get irritated a lot in case of situation of using such long name in future is she settles outside India for studies or career.

March 3, 2025 at 2:27 pmThe long name is not a problem but will become a pain later . My suggestion is to get the passport right now with her name + father name + mother name in some order and then get her name changed formally to something simple and update the passport later. It is a problem with a lot of south indian people and I learnt it the hard way and simplified my son’s name without any initials. My wife has a similar name and we still struggle sometimes as different documents have slightly different names.. Simplify and your daughter will thank you later..

March 3, 2025 at 2:51 pmI have the same thoughts.Even I asked in PSK that if I get the birth certificate updated to remove the initials will they be able to put the surname as Priya ans given name as Karthika. He said it’s not possible.
I am thinking to get that simplified now itself to avoid any future issues.
Given this, should I be changing the name in birth certificate and apply name change in passport using that.
Or is it some other process.
One more question I had is, if I do a name change using some procedure, should I be getting a new birth certificate with new name or not.
Just thinking to get all facts correct and proceed after thinking through.

March 3, 2025 at 3:16 pmSorry i am not familiar with the name change process. For my son, we just avoided all initials and double names right when we named him . A good lawyer or notary should be able to guide you on the process of name change. -

March 3, 2025 at 3:52 pmChange of Name is very easy. It needs an affidavit and newspaper ad.My birth certificate has a Q. My first passport had a K. I tried to get it changed to a Q when I applied for new passport (not renew) because all my other docs had a Q. Passport office accepted then rejected it during processing. A passport officer told me to get a name change done and apply again. Only then it came with a Q. With a big stamp saying I have changed my name. As you can expect it led to visa application issues. Finally, my third passport came with a Q and no stamp.Β
Moral of the story, get her name changed asap before connecting to aadhar/passport/school/bank.

March 3, 2025 at 3:00 pmPlease apply for name change by filing an affidavit and publishing in newspaper. Lot of agents for the same. You have to apply with the newspaper clipping.Apply for change in birth certificate also, because all schooling documents are based on birth certificate and this will cause discrepancy in future.

Will proceed with new name on the renewal as it will expire when she is 5 Yr old. Also, any suggestion on how I should change the name to avoid this. Should I just have name without the initials SB in the birth certificate?
