        Hi everyone,

Me and my girlfriend are in a very stressful situation and need some guidance.

About 1 year and 2 months ago, we rented a 2BHK flat along with a female friend. She took the master bedroom with an attached washroom, saying she needed more space because she had two cats and a lot of belongings. We agreed, and my girlfriend and I took the other room, which has a balcony.

She insisted that since we were two people, we should pay 60% of the rent and deposit, and she’d pay 40%. We agreed to that too.

Over time, she had multiple arguments with the landlord. Without informing us, the landlord asked her to vacate the flat in January. Apparently, he also informed her about a rent hike, but she never communicated this to us and instead told the landlord that we were unwilling to pay more—again, without telling us anything.

Eventually, we got a formal notice to vacate, and when we contacted the landlord, he told us she hadn’t paid her full share of the deposit for the entire year. She only paid it after he issued the notice.

We spoke to the landlord, told him we were okay with the increased rent, and asked to stay if we found a new flatmate. He agreed.

The girl finally moved out but refused to return the keys to her room and the main door. When the landlord asked her to return them, she said, “Throw them (us) out first and give me my deposit, then I’ll return the keys.”

Since moving out, she’s harassed us by ringing the doorbell and knocking in the middle of the night multiple times. One night, after we refused to open the door, she called the police and falsely told them someone inside was trying to harm themselves. She gave the police my number, and they kept calling me.

We informed our landlord, and eventually, he arranged a meeting in front of the police. We’ve paid every rupee we ever owed her and the landlord. Now she is threatening to take us to court, but we genuinely have nothing to do with the deposit dispute—that’s between her and the landlord.

We don’t want trouble, but we’re tired of the harassment.

What should we do next? Do we need to be legally worried? Can we file a complaint about the false police call and late-night harassment?

        Any advice is appreciated.
