        Hello, Reddit community.

I’m reaching out for some advice regarding a difficult situation I’ve been facing. I am an NRI originally from Andhra Pradesh (AP), India. Last year, I got married to my husband, who is from Telangana. We now live in the United States.

However, six months into the marriage, I started facing constant harassment related to dowry and money demands. I came to know that I was deceived about many things before the marriage, and after tying the knot, I realized the extent of the lies. The harassment from my in-laws has been unbearable, especially concerning dowry, and it has caused me a lot of emotional distress.

The emotional toll has been so heavy that I fell into depression. At one point, it became so overwhelming that I even tried to commit suicide twice. Thankfully, I was able to get the help I needed, but the pain and trauma still linger.

I now want to file a case against my in-laws and seek legal action. I approached the AP NRI cell for help, but they are advising me that I need to file the case in Telangana, as that’s where my husband’s family is based. The issue is that my family is from AP, and the marriage also took place in AP, so I’m not sure how filing a case in Telangana would be relevant in my case.

I’m feeling confused and overwhelmed by this whole process. Can anyone share their thoughts or experiences regarding where I should file my case and how I can proceed with legal action? Any guidance on the best course of action would be really appreciated.

        Thank you for your support!

Registration: Fill out the complaint form with details of the complainant and victim, including names, addresses, contact numbers, date of birth, and respondent details.
Complaint Details: Write your complaint in the provided space.
          Submission: Submit the complaint online.
Status Check: You can check the status of your complaint using the complaint number, login ID, and password provided upon acceptance.
Other NCW Resources: The NCW also provides a 24/7 helpline (7827-170-170) and other resources on their website http://ncw.nic.in/.

Sorry if this sounds stupid but is it also state specific or is it more general compared to NRI Cell

Generally you file the complaint and then they will forward it to relevant city office.

Sorry to hear about the distressing situation your facing. Regarding your concern about jurisdiction, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India has already ruled that a married woman can file a complaint from her hometown, even if the marriage did not take place there or if the husband resides in another jurisdiction. So, you can file your complaint from AP if that is more convenient for you.

However, please remember that the most critical aspect of your case is the initial complaint. Once a complaint is filed, it cannot be amended n any supplementary complaints are often seen as afterthoughts. Therefore, it’s essential that your complaint is drafted meticulously, covering all aspects of the harassment, deceit n emotional trauma you have suffered incorporating all the essential elements of the relevant offences. All the best.

Is there a way to get my initial complaint to be reviewed to see if it covers all bases?

Absolutely. First, you need to provide your advocate with all the facts of the case so they can determine which legal provisions apply. Once that is clear, it’s crucial to review the relevant sections and their essential ingredients before drafting the complaint. Rather than starting from scratch, the complaint should be structured around the framework of these essential ingredients to ensure it comprehensively addresses all legal aspects of the case. So once the draft is complete, you’d know for yourself if it covers all the essential elements of the offences. However it’s important to ensure the language is not copied directly from the statutes or the judgments.

Go for divorce (which can be filed in the US)and never ever think of committing suicide. Life is precious.

Didn’t you in your previous post say that they didn’t take dowry?
Why are you filling a false case?

I mentioned that my husband’s family did not take dowry, and I stand by that statement. However, the issues I’m raising in this post are not about dowry but about the emotional pressure and manipulation I’ve been facing regarding the green card process in the place of dowry. The comments and demands from his family about my salary, savings, and the speed at which I process his GC have been a major source of stress for me.

Do you have dementia or don’t know how to read?
Your title specifically states that you want to file a dowry harassment case.
And here you are saying they did not take any dowry.
You sound like someone who just wants to get alimony and screw a man’s life.
Just by looking at 2 of your posts I can get a sense of how untrustworthy you are.
