Need advice on sublet deposit return

Hi everyone,
I was staying in a sublet and had paid some amount as security deposit to the tenant(not the landlord).

Now that it’s time to return the deposit, the main tenant is refusing to return the full amount. He says he had to pay a brokerage fee to find a replacement and is deducting that from my deposit. However, he never informed me beforehand that any brokerage fee would be applicable or deductible.

What can I do in this situation to try and recover my deposit?

Hi. Any contract that you executed with the tenant? However, the larger law is that the security deposit is meant to cover damages, and not the brokerage fee. Is the amount substantial?

No there was no legal contract as such. The amount is 25k.
