My name is Kiranjot Singh surname.
So the issue is Singh is used as suffix in Sikhism and some other Hindu castes for boys. This has nothing to do with surname. But problem occurs with modern technology. Several forms have either charcter limit or they keep only initial part as first name and Singh plus surname as last name (or it can be any random variations based on system used or human managing it).

The company I am working in is also not correcting it. In this case they can, but making excuses being lazy. The reason is several people from Punjab abolished their surname and use only Singh/Kaur as their last name. They do it because they’re not well educated, and it gets difficult for them to explain people in US and Canada.

Singh is your middle name in this case. If there’s no option for middle name in forms then it’d just be your first name and last name.

What is the legal advice you’re seeking?

Btw in Sikhism, using ‘Singh’ for men and ‘Kaur’ for women is essential, as it symbolizes equality and the rejection of the caste system. Anyone who still believes in caste or continues to use caste-based surnames is going against the fundamental teachings of Sikhism and cannot be considered a Sikh.

Lol, firstly I am here for legal advice not moral gyan.

Second, I don’t need certificate of being sikh from a random stranger.

Thrid, you need to read sikh history. Majority of sikh missal were based on caste.

Fourth, caste system was not abolished rather caste discrimination was abolished.

Fifth, Two seperate surnames are not practical. A family needs to have one single surname.

Sixth, The first generation sikh who went abroad were having surnames. The trend of abolishing only started when 3rd/4th uneducated, illiterate people from Punjab started migrating.

Seventh, you need read the history of kaur and kauri as well.

Eighth, surname helps you trace your lineage. It has nothing to do religion. Surnames are not necessarily based on caste, but they can be based location, profession awarded title, etc.

Ninth, The major hypocrisy which can be seen only in punjab where you can get killed because of your caste, yet on the other side you don’t leave a chance to keep shouting and humiliating other to not use surnames. Look at the non Punjabi Sikh, they use their surnames but feel proud only for being a sikh not for having that surname.

What specific legal advice are you actually seeking? It’s unclear from both your post and your comment.

This isn’t about moral opinion it’s about factual accuracy. Many Sikhs use only ‘Singh’ and ‘Kaur’ without facing the issues you’ve mentioned. As someone well-versed in Sikh history, I can confidently say that those who continue to use caste-based surnames are not following the core principles of Sikhism. You don’t need a certificate from anyone to be Sikh, but it’s important to acknowledge that rejecting the caste system is a foundational reason Sikhism emerged as a distinct religion and what you’re suggesting goes against the very principles of Sikhism.

So again, what is the legal advice you’re seeking?
