        Hey everyone,
I don’t have a surname in any of my official documents—10th & 12th marksheets, Aadhaar card, birth certificate—nothing.

Now I need to get some new documents made: passport, PAN card, bank account, and voter ID.

        So here’s my dilemma:

        OPTION 1:
Should I continue with just my single name, since that’s what all my existing documents say?

        OPTION 2:
Or should I start using my father’s name as a surname in these new documents?

I’m worried that adding a surname now (even if it’s my father’s name) might cause mismatches with my older documents and lead to future complications.

If anyone has gone through something similar or knows the practical side of this, I’d really appreciate your reply.
What’s the safest and smartest move here?

In order to add surname to your birth certificate you need to go through court procedure. Once the name is updated then you can change in Adhar passport etc. and for the mark sheets you need to apply it in the study board

but i read somewhere that it’s not really possible to be changed in the study board unless it was a mistake on their part or there is misspell

It’s a change in name so they need to.
Just think about people who have changed their name, as with this logic they would be stuck with the old one in their marksheets.

Just continue using the single name.

You don’t need a surname, use your father’s name as last name and that’s more than sufficient

                        My 2 cents:

                        1. Passport and all international document (visa, international school, etc) will need a 2nd name (either father’s or Surname)

                        2. I used my father’s name as I was in the same situation. Now my kid’s names are having my name as surname and not the actual surname.

According to me the best would have been that I use a family surname…for whatever reason it was not being used, check with grandparents, relatives what your surname is.

Eg – Your name . Initial of father (can be expanded fully as middle name) . Surname (eg: Sharma, Trivedi, nishad, Gowda, Patil, etc)

That way further documentation will be corrected.

Concerning your previous documentation (SSC marks sheet), Name . initial is acceptable ( just make an affidavit that the person is you)

Edit: wanted to add: all previous documentation still has your single name + s/o your father’s name. So the documentation is valid in my above example.

Point 2. Birth certificate- typically the original birth certificate only have Son…birthdate….hospital….and your parents names. So it ties into the documentation. You can if needed have a new Birth certificate made with your full name as suggested above.

Example name would look like : Rahul . D (father’s name dharmendra) . Sahastrabuddi

I don’t really have a particular family surname because it’s like everyone uses a different surname. So could i just go with my father’s name instead of the initial like- “RAHUL DHARMENDRA”. Would that still be appropriate after i get an affidavit from the court?

🤣🤣🤣 yes they will probably have their father’s surname.

In this case consider that your surname will change after marriage. You will probably take your Husband’s name and surname and all previous documentation is valid with the marriage certificate. As name change is after marriage.

In this case you don’t need to worry – just expand your initial.

Let’s say you are Pinky D(Dharmendra), you can start using Pinky Dharmendra for IT, bank. For Passport you can use Pink Dharmendra.

After marriage you can get passport changed to Pinky Rahul (husband’s name) sahastrabuddhi or Pink D sahastrabuddi or Pinky D Rahul as you wish.

But make sure you name your kids properly with surname…else they will have the same issue in the future.

You can check the process of changing your legal name.
Lots of paper work but worth it.

You can proceed just with your first name but the family name will have “FNU”- Family name unavailable. This will also appear on all your visa documents.

Not an issue at all with single name. Passport is also no issue. They write your first name in last name as well, No issue issue at all.

Get it done. add a surname. it will be better for you in the future and save you from unnecessary hassle. I got mine added.

                                            here’s what I did.
                                            – advertised in the newspaper.
-got it published in the Gazette
                                            – based on the Gazette notification, get your Aadhaar updated.
-then PAN and Passport after that.

names of the school/ college certificate can me done later on or a letter can be added with proof stating name change/surname addition when applying for jobs/university etc.

I see a lot of misinformation here. DO NOT randomly add your father’s name for your documents, you will have a really hard time up ahead.

In documents like PAN where a last name is necessary. If you look carefully it’s only the last name that is necessary. So you enter your first name there. Similarly for others.

but if i get an affidavit stating that I’ve got surname(my father’s name) and then updated my adhar too so won’t it officially become my surname?

It will be a problem when you go to make a passport, as 10th certificate and birth certificate doesn’t have one. It’s easier to get a passport without surname than mismatching documents, an affidavit is not recognised everywhere. Don’t believe me, start with pan, you go to ndsl and start applying, the lastname field is the only required one 🙂
