March 26, 2025 at 1:05 pmI started working as an intern at a startup on February 19th. I was told that I would be paid on 19th Feb. It has now been over a week since my first month completed, but I haven’t received my payment. The founder, who is personally managing payments, keeps telling me every day that it will be done “by today,” but by the end of the business day, nothing happens. This has been going on for a while now, and I’m starting to feel like I’m being taken for a ride.
On top of that, yesterday my team leader assigned me some work, and he was really happy with it, even appreciated me. But later, I got a call from the founder saying that my work is getting worse and that I need to improve. This just feels like a tactic to delay my payment or create an excuse to not pay me at all.
What legal options do I have in this situation? Can I take any action to ensure I get paid? I have messages where the payment was promised. Any advice would be appreciated.

March 26, 2025 at 1:20 pmStart looking outside for opportunities. Don’t bother about money. Keep stalling the task the way he stalls your cash. It’s just one month so no big deal. Give yourself time to prepare for other companies.Don’t have any soft spot for them since they don’t have it for you and and they are straight blaming and questioning your skills. Involve lawyer when things get ugly which it shouldn’t.

In your case, initiating legal proceedings would mean enforcing a legal contract, that you most likely don’t have or even if you do, it isn’t worth the paper it was printed on.
And why would anyone promise you a stipend on your first day? Doesn’t make sense.

March 26, 2025 at 1:35 pmI get your point, but I do have an offer letter stating it’s a 3-month paid internship with payment paid by the 19th of each month. So, it’s not just a verbal promise—it’s in writing.-

March 26, 2025 at 6:55 pmLike I said, it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on. They’ve just typed a non-enforceable bullshit contract to wipe their asses with.Solution: Get out of there, look for something better. If the job exposure is good and you’re learning a lot, then stay there for 3 months and get a LOT while leaving.
