EHello everyone,
I recently applied for my passport and had my police verification today.The officer visited and asked for my documents. I provided my Aadhar card, PAN card, 10th marksheet, and my Rent Agreement.
He then asked for my birth certificate. Although I had submitted my 10th marksheet as proof of birth (as allowed), he still checked the birth certificate, where my mother’s name is incorrectly spelled. However, in my 10th marksheet and all other documents, the name is correct.As per the passport rules, a birth certificate is not mandatory for adult applicants, so I assumed it wouldn’t be an issue.
Later, he asked for my parents’ Aadhar cards. Their Aadhar cards have their old address (not updated to my current address).
He clicked photos of all documents and told me that my file will not be approved because:My parents’ address does not match mine, and
There is a discrepancy in my mother’s name on the birth certificate.
He also suggested that either I correct these things and reapply, or pay ₹5000 to “get it cleared.”
I have two main questions:
1. Since I am an adult, is it necessary for my parents’ address to match mine for my passport application?
2. Given the situation, is it likely that my application will be rejected?
Any advice or guidance from people who have faced similar situations would be greatly appreciated!

Rthis is just bullshit police constable nonsense regarding address and mothers name. Just give him 5000 he is asking and get it cleared without drama. This is a country based on Gandhi’s principle… don’t forget “Gandhiji”

EBro 5K is a huge amount for me. I can’t spend that much just on the passport process. Honestly I was thinking around 500 only. Even when my friend applied he paid just 500.

RThen negotiate with the constable he will mostly adjust to as much you can offer. But remember, this may backfire and you’ll endup spending 5K directly or indirectly with lot of time wastage.

CRefuse the bribe, they have to justify each rejection, once rejected, you’ll be asked to go to regional passport office and show documents there, and then they will most likely ask you to file an affidavit for the inaccuracy in birth certificate.
If this was done over a call, please keep a recording at hand and present it to the passport office at Regional passport office.

EThe next day, he called and told me to come to the police station. He said it would cost 5,000 because my documents were wrong.
I told him I can’t pay more than 500 and said my friend got it done without a birth certificate. In the end, he asked for 1,000, but I gave him 500 and left.

SSee regarding address whatever he is saying is bullshit and he can’t send adverse report because of address issue and is just creating this issue to take higher amount from you.
Regarding mother’s name on birth certificate, BC precedes all other documents for personal particulars and hence any mistake on BC can’t be ignored unless you give him the money or get corrections on your birth certificate.-
EBut as per the rules, a birth certificate is not compulsory. I had submitted my 10th-grade marksheet at the time of application because it has the correct name. So, rejecting on the basis of the birth certificate does not make any sense. Even at the PSK, they did not ask me for a birth certificate.

SYes it is not compulsory for passport application, but as per the passport act, the person has to be an Indian citizen for an Indian passport, and as per citizenship act you can be a citizen of India by birth, registration or naturalization.
In your case since you are an Indian citizen by birth and you have to prove it, if they demand while police verification hence they can technically ask for a birth certificate and hold your application.

CBribe is on the higher side, try to bring him down to a thousand and accept for 2 and pay it off, don’t listen to people saying got a passport officer or vigilance.
Remember a local constable can do a lot more harm than just rejecting your passport verification.
Be smart, play games which you can win and remember your time value, you probably make more than 2k per hour so not worth wasting an hour of your life over this.
