I renewed my passport it got delivered home 2 weeks back.
I just got a call from the police station telling me that since my house is on rent my passport is getting rejected.
The thing is a part of my house is on rent and I stay with my family in the other half. I have been residing here since birth,
Can this be a reason for my passport rejection?

URejected after renewal? Was it a tatkaal if not then it was supposed to be renewed after clearance only. And living in a rented place does not make you ineligible.

UYes i was even wondering how they delivered my passport without police verification. Also Im not staying in a rented place, Its a part of my house thats rented

UFor passport renewal, a post-police verification is conducted if there are no changes to the Name, Address or any other personal details in the application. I received my renewed passport within 24 hours and police verification happened 48-72 hours post that.

UReceived a call from the cop; he asked basic questions like what is my profession and why I need a passport. He also asked me if I have any criminal history and pending FIR against my name and then requested me to WhatsApp my Aadhar to him. That’s it, next day the status changed to ‘police report has been submitted to the SP office’. This is the process in Kerala; it might differ in your area and they might ask you to visit the station.

MHouse being on rent is no excuse. Police are only supposed to verify your address – not discuss its ownership.
Maybe you have not factored the chai pani expenses they expected.

MThey come home for the verification. Take some pics of you, get you to sign some papers and thats about it. If they have already tried you at home and you werent around – they may ask you to come in to the station.
Depending on their other intent – you will get some additional messaging like the cost of living or be asked to come to the station to complete some formalities. Please ensure to have your envelope ready in such cases.

Phey I had the same issue. I am an NRI and our house in India is on rent. I stay with my dad whenever visiting home. Police refused to complete the verification for my daughter’s PP because of this and said I needed to apply from my dad’s PRO.
After greasing some palms, and lot of appeasing and requesting, he called back “mam I am writing that you are an NRI and that the renters are your friends so you stay in their house whenever you visit.” Problem solved, PP received.

FIf your passport is delivered how they will reject it, unless there is communication from Passport office. Call to Passport car or visit the office. Don’t pay those Police Thullas.

DJust ignore him. Don’t go and visit him. Block his no. You have gotten the passport now he is trying to mint money by making a fool out of you. Nothing good will come out of meeting him.

Uso just ignore him? He knows I got my passport and has told me that if he sends a revocation report the passport will get rejected

DCall Passport seva Kendra helpline and lodge a complaint against him. How was passport issued without his valid report? Wont they take action against him if he now decides to change the report. You can meet him if you still think it but I doubt he can send revocation now without putting himself in trouble.
My father had bought our home many years back. The fucker before us had tampered the electricity meter. Within a week of us buying he also filed a complaint of meter tampered to get bounty (they share a percentage with informers) so essentially bastard implicated us for his own wrongdoing. After that we had to pay a hefty penalty. Now these cases are compoundable which means like a traffic fine, once you pay the fine, crime gets expunged as if it never existed. A cop called my father after we had paid the fine threatening him of some nonsense.
My dad asked me to look into it, I called the cop and gave me an earful about how can he harass for a compoundable offence already paid for. He never called us again. Cant trust them man.-
DEither way part of your house being rented to someone else is not a ground for revocation, so you can decide to meet him or skip that and even if he files an adverse report against you, he cant do much, RPO will issue you a show cause notice, and you can take his case over there.

UJust confirmed with the Passport seva kendra helpline, They told me Sometimes the verification is done post delivery and if i fail to reach the police station i will be questioned/not allowed at the immigration

DNo such rule man, I have passport and travelled to 7 countries, except ground floor our entire house is rented out.
My sister post marriage applied for a passport, considering all her documents had our home address she applied it from our address the cop was ranting how after marriage she can’t apply on maternal home address. We just told him to do his job, collect documents, didnt gave any bribe, pestered him to show docs that it is not allowed for her to use maternal home address and he gave in. Just be confident mate.

Ui got my passport in 2 days of my submission, still clueless on how this happened. I told the cop I got my passport and he told me that once he submits the report, the passport will be rejected and the RPO will ask me to submit the passport

UFor renewal – police verification can happen post receipt of passport.
I am not aware of the rules around renting. So can’t comment on that.
Do check the status of your passport application on the portal. There might be police verification pending.
The police might be looking at envelope by invoking fear as suggested by others.
From a practical point of view, resolving amicably with them is the best way forward.
