UHi all,
I’m an Indian passport holder and my passport is up for renewal. I got married 2 years ago but haven’t had the chance to register our marriage in India (very irresponsible of us 🙁 now I understand). My spouse is in India.
It’s absolutely necessary for me to visit India this march and get my passport renewed before I exit US. If I declare myself married in the passport application form – the form asks me for my spouse name. As per VFS requirements to add spouse name: they need either:
1. Marriage certificate (which we don’t have and can’t make right way because we are in different locations)
2. Joint marriage declaration (which we can’t make because we are in different locations)Please let me know if you see any legal problems with my below plan to circumvent this situation:
1. I renew my passport right away declaring myself single
2. Get my marriage certificate in India during March stay
3. Come back to US and then apply for spouse name addition.Do you think I am going the right way? Much appreciated

UReach out to some Bangalore agency that help you get marriage license. Just search in google map. Go by reviews.
Karnataka marriage certificate are made online. You don’t need to be at the same place. Although their online process is fucked and document verification is done manually. So an agent will get it done for you. Mostly takes 2-5 business days and ~6 inr via the agent.
What you do need in this process is phone numbers that are linked to your Aadhar cards, and 3 witnesses’s who have Aadhaar card. All these five phone numbers will get authentication OTP which you need to provide.

UThis is super helpful. Quick question – we got married in New Delhi, do you think this would create problems for marriage license in Karnataka?
