        Hi everyone,
I’m a 25-year-old male international student in Hyderabad. Last Saturday, I took my ASUS A15 laptop (only 11 months old) to a repair shop in Secunderabad. Since I bought the laptop in Saudi Arabia and its warranty isn’t valid in India, I couldn’t go to the customer service center. Instead, I went to this shop recommended by a friend, as I only needed the thermal paste replaced.

The shop agreed to do the job for ₹1,000 (even though others charge ₹600). I agreed and told them to ensure the work was done properly. They completed the job, reassembled the laptop, and gave it back to me. However, when I restarted the device, there was no display. I immediately returned it and asked them to check. They said it was late and asked me to come back on Monday. I refused to leave without a receipt and had them document the problem, stating that I hadn’t taken the laptop out of the store.

On Monday, they told me they had sent the laptop to a “good repair guy” who needed more time. When I asked if they trusted this person, they assured me they did. The next day, they still didn’t know what the issue was. When I asked to see my laptop, I found that some screws were missing, and the keyboard backlight wasn’t working. At this point, I was furious and told them to stop working on it.

Since it was Bhogi, most other repair shops were closed. The next day, I went to a reputed shop, ensuring one of the original shop staff carried the laptop to avoid any blame on me. The new shop examined the laptop and informed me of two possibilities:

        1. The monitor cable might be the issue (fixable).

        2. The motherboard could be damaged, making the device practically dead.

Now, I’m unsure how to proceed. If I go to the police, what would they do, and what would the process look like?

Get the cable fixed. If that doesn’t solve the problem, get a new motherboard or laptop. If the motherboard got fried, it’s possible it happened before you gave it for repair.

Botching up a repair job is not a criminal offence. The police can do nothing.
