March 22, 2025 at 1:11 pmHello legalAdviceIndia Subreddit. I have Posted a review on r/jaipur about my college in my city. I am anxious and confused about that is my college is able to take some legal actions against me ? I said some harsh but true things about my college, these things are able to harm the reputation of my college. So if any lawyer is watching this please tell me can my college take any legal action against me ? If yes then what changes I should make in my Reddit post ? -

March 22, 2025 at 1:54 pmYes, your college can take legal action against you if they believe your post harms their reputation. They may file a defamation case, if they think your statements are false and damaging. However, if everything you said is true and provable, it is a valid defense.Under the IT Act, 2000, they might also claim that your post is offensive or spreads false information. While Section 66A (which restricted online speech) has been struck down, they could still try using section 67 (related to offensive content online). Additionally, they may take disciplinary action like suspension or expulsion.
To protect yourself, consider editing your post to remove abusive language and focus only on facts and personal experiences. Avoid direct attacks on individuals and keep any evidence that supports your claims. Stay anonymous to avoid being traced.
Most colleges avoid legal action due to costs and bad publicity, so they may try internal action first.
