Folks, I’m in a painful situation. We live in a poor neighborhood with our immediate neighbor being an auto wala. They are a family of 5, with all children being girl child. They cause a lot of trouble to us, a few years back they had broken flower pots on our wall, I constantly have to listen to the autowali abuse us, don’t allow us to construct anything etc…
Their latest obsession is with the cctv camera we have. They are demanding that it be pulled down, and that we “are spying on their girls”. For context, I’m the youngest in my family and not married, mid 20’s and a student.
I’m quite obstinate on this point. We had to bow down to their gundagardi for peace of mind before and I am fed up, don’t want to continue letting them take advantage, above all I’m irritated by their ego. Me/my brothers, educated people, who are well settled, spying on their goat herderding ugly girls!
I need your advice : should I change the direction of the camera? In case they call the police, will I land in trouble under some wierd law of this unfortunate country.
Attached is a still from the cam. On the upper right you can see their door. Tmrw I will upload a better image.

What can I do to make them learn their place I.e.not get the impression that they can get away with everything just by shouting and abusing.
I’m really troubled by them, they shout and use so much vulgar language, I cannot study for days after an episode. I sometimes feel taking the law in my own hand is the only option. Please, if some one has any inputs I’d love to hear.

P.S. Update: She is now accusing me personally of spying on her girls. What if she takes it to the police?

If your CCTV camera is able to record things inside their premises then that would be a breach of their privacy. That being said, they got no right to ask you to remove the CCTV camera entirely when it is located in your property and directed at the road. But you will need to adjust the angle so as to not record anything in their house.

If they harass you or try to threaten you then try to get a recording of it and just report the issue to police.

The sentence “recording inside their house”, will it be applicable if when they open the door a little bit of the inside is covered, by little bit it would be a few steps…

If it is only their door which is visible then itโ€™s alright and wonโ€™t be an issue.

I shiuk have been easily able to arrive at a logical answer to my own question, but the idiots have me so scared I can’t think straight. They get the local goons, create a shit show out of it and I’m worried I might land up in legal trouble on either False allegations or due to some other “Indian speciality” law

Just report it the police. If they are objecting to CCTV camera so much without cause then they might be involved in some illegal activity and donโ€™t want to get it recorded. You donโ€™t have to worry about legal troubles as long as your camera canโ€™t record inside their premises. Even if they file a false complaint, you will just need to show the recording and everything will get cleared up.

But you should be careful of the goons they get. Best to gather some evidence and file a case against them for harassment and criminal intimidation. That should put them in their place.

Thanks for the reassuring words, she is now accusing me personally of spying on the girls, and calling out loudly “call police” whenever she sees me, even moving inside my own house. It’s become a headache. I fear False allegations and given the current False women accusations in India.

On the aspect of illegal activity, it’s not so much illegal as their urge to fight…. Whatever we do, they object. That’s their main motive….

As I said, gather some evidence against them and file police complaint for harassment, criminal intimidation and if she tries to enter your house, then for trespass.
