My Indian parents are not letting me leave India and go back home now that I’ve finished my college education. They are forcing me to get a job and settle here, plus get an arranged marriage. My parents are very abusive and don’t let me leave the house.
I’m worried if I book a flight in secret, take my passport, and go to the airport to immediately board a flight, they will call police. There will be a good 4-5 hours between when I leave the house without their permission and my flight’s departure. That is plenty of time for my family and the police to react.
**Can my family stop me from flying out of the airport safely by calling police?** Here are some things they can potentially do:
1. Place a missing person case
2. Lie to police saying I stole money, was kidnapped, or I’m mentally ill / not sound enough to fly
3. Bribe themSomething to keep in mind is my family is very influential in the Indian government. We have a chairperson and MLA in my family. I am not sure if this is a factor but ya… worried about corruption.
I am also considering leaving the house unannounced and flying out of a different state. Is this a good idea? Or will I come across issues with the police there if the missing person case leaves the state I’m currently in? What will the police do after finding me at the airport? Will they prevent me from leaving India? Will they send me back to my parents? When answering my questions, keep in mind my family is very influential in the government.
Please do not tell me to “talk to my parents.” That won’t work. I’ve tried multiple times and they get hostile.

AThe MLA in my family probably won’t be involved if I leave at 1pm for a 5pm flight. They would have to make some calls but maybe 4 hours is enough time. What do I know.
If the MLA isn’t involved what can my parents tell to police to stop me from leaving the country? (theoretically)

FThis is the wrong sub, legally you have every right to travel where you want as an adult, but laws are just a suggestion in India. You mentioned that your family has an MLA, meaning they can do absolutely whatever they want.
Going to another state will limit your family’s influence, if you have the logistic planning to pull it off then it might be a safer way for you. I wish you the best of luck.

AWon’t work since I had a job interview and my mother was there the whole time. They follow me everywhere I go. They also want me to work from home. Going to an office is not an option.

I1. According to the Indian Majority Act, once you are 18, you are legally an adult and have the right to make decisions about your life. So, no one can force you.
2. u/ Art19(1)(d) of the Indian Constitution, you have a guaranteed right to move freely throughout India. This includes the right to leave the country.
Based on these, if the police or any other authorities contact you, you can assertively tell them you are leaving of your own free will.
3. Now, being accused of theft is another matter, so document and only take what you can prove is yours when leaving. If it comes to it, you may also choose to file a wrongful confinement complaint against your parents.
4. Leaving the state and flying can help, but it also adds another layer of bureaucracy, which, if the system is engaged, will only add complexity.

I am not sure if I can assertively tell police if they catch me at the airport that I’m leaving India out of my free will. You think they will be like “ok go home, cya” when my parents file a police complaint like missing person?

BIf you are a canadian citizen then just contact the canadian embassy and ask them to help you return home.

SSince you are a Canadian citizen, you could consult Canadian Embassy and narrate your problem. They would provide you security to immediately leave India.

AI already asked the embassy. They can’t help me with security or influence police by telling them in advance that I’m trying to fly out safely. All they can do is arrange documents and provide financial assistance lul

SBook a direct flight to Dubai since it provides visa on arrival for Canadian citizens. Keep in mind that you don’t carry any luggage. Just put some money and valuables in a laptop bag and leave in the afternoon on the pretext of meeting a friend for work. There are flights for Dubai in noon. Your parents won’t care as nobody wants to go out in the sun during summers. Once in Dubai book the next flight to Canada.

WIf you have the extra money to spend, book a daytime international flight to any random country that you can access visa-free (many options available as a Canadian). Fly back to Canada from there. Major international flights usually leave at night and based on what you’ve told, leaving during night might be tough. Leave during the day the under the pretence of a job interview and catch a flight to someplace like Dubai or other in ME.
