Today, I received a scam call disguised as an automated message from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which connected me to fake RBI customer care. Normally, my phone identifies scam calls, but this time, it didn’t. The fake customer care representative informed me that someone had taken a credit card in my name, defaulted on payments, and that RBI had lodged a complaint against me with the Hyderabad police station.

This scared me because I have heard about credit card and personal loan scams. I told them that Hyderabad was too far for me to visit, and the fake RBI representative suggested I could lodge a complaint directly through the call. He claimed I needed a clearance letter from RBI to withdraw the complaint and connected me to someone claiming to be a Hyderabad police officer.

The “officer” asked me to get on a WhatsApp video call. The WhatsApp number displayed the Hyderabad police station name and logo, which made it look legitimate. On the video call, the scammer only turned on my camera and began questioning me. I explained that I had never left my state (Tamil Nadu) and wasn’t even eligible for a credit card. I suspected that scammers must have forged documents to commit fraud.

The call was then transferred to another “superior officer,” who interrogated me like a criminal. He asked me questions such as, “Where did you share your Aadhaar number?” and demanded my Aadhaar card to check if I had any criminal record. Shockingly, he claimed that a credit card, allegedly applied for in my name a year ago, had been used for money laundering.

The officer then escalated the fear by saying the case was highly sensitive and that I would be arrested by the CBI immediately since the Supreme Court had already transferred the case to them. He even showed me a fake arrest warrant, which terrified me. Tears rolled down my face as he suggested me to beg the “CBI chief” for priority investigation.

When the fake “CBI chief” got involved, he interrogated me further and said I needed to disclose all my assets to prove that I didn’t have illegal or laundered money. Sadly, I revealed that I had inherited a piece of land but had no jewelry, mutual funds, stocks, or PPF. I also disclosed details about my monthly salary and bank balance.

Finally, they asked me to send money to a random UPI ID for “Supreme Court verification,” which raised my suspicion. I disconnected the call immediately.

This was one of the scariest scams I’ve ever encountered. They used my fear against me for over two hours, monitoring my every move and leaving me no time to think. They constantly fear-mongered about how a CBI arrest would ruin my reputation, cost me my job, and destroy my life.

Now, I suspect that they have my Aadhaar card number and could use it for identity theft, opening fake bank accounts, or taking loans. They might even get fake SIM cards and continue their fraudulent activities.

Here’s what I’ve done so far to protect myself:

        1. Locked my Aadhaar biometrics.
        2. Checked my CIBIL report (no loans found).
        3. Planning to lodge a cybercrime complaint.

What else should I do to prevent scammers from misusing my Aadhaar card? Please help.

Wow, how did they convince you of anything man?

When I got a similar call it started with an automated message saying my name and aadhar was used for criminal activities, press 9 to connect with CBI Cyber Cell. (Lol)

When I pressed the number a lazy sounding guy answered, used my name, and asked for the last 4 digits of my aadhar. When I refused he threatened me that people are using my identity for money laundering and drug dealing. I replied “No sir you’re wrong, it’s not others using my id, it’s me doing all this, come arrest me, you already have my address right?”

He was quiet for a second, called me names and cut the call.

They’re such obvious fakes. None of this stuff actually happens on the phone in real life.

Take a deep breath and you are good. Glad that you didn’t fell for this scam

Regarding Aadhar details, nothing will happen because they already have all details.

Aadhar name which you shared at the start of call will be printed on fake FIR using printer which print while talking to you which they later send to you on whatapp.

If you share fake Aadhar card showing name as Donald Trump, FIR will have that name. Nothing else
