March 14, 2025 at 4:46 pmHi Reddit community,I’m reaching out in a state of immense stress and fear for my family. We run a small dhaba is our only means of livelihood. For over 10 years, we’ve operated our shop, closing around midnight.
However, since March 9, 2025, we’ve faced relentless harassment and threats from local policemen. These officers regularly order food from us without paying. On March 10, they demanded tandoori rotis, but since we’re short-staffed, we had to discontinue the tandoor. When my father explained this calmly, they reacted violently. That same night, they arrived, beating my father and our staff with lathis and throwing our tawa out. They threatened us, demanding we close our shop by 10 PM, which isn’t feasible for us since most of our customers come after 9 PM.
To make matters worse, a nearby dhaba, just 10 shops away, operates until midnight without any issues from the police. Behind our shop, there’s an illegal wine and betting shop that operates till midnight without any interference from these officers.
We are at our wits’ end. This shop is our sole source of income, and we don’t know how to handle this harassment. We’re living in constant fear and stress. Any advice or support would be deeply appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read our situation.
Please help us please please please please. I am crying while writing all this.

March 14, 2025 at 5:10 pmtwo ways to go about it !either go meet the sho of the police station, talk to him, reason, if all fails offer a bribe which in all likely hood is going to be a monthly thing.
second thing you can do is, bribe the police staff which comes to shut you down, then secretly record it and file a complaint with the cbi.
also get clarity on local laws as to what is the permissible time limit allowed as most places in metros remain upon till 2 AM in the night.

March 14, 2025 at 5:38 pmNext time they come, just record everything in your mobile. Upload it over social media and tag authorities , local media and opposition. Write caption something in the line ‘ recorded police in nearby dhaba’ or something like that so they don’t track it back directly at you.-

March 15, 2025 at 3:10 amDon’t do this. You will only invite more trouble. Expect the free food for thullas as the cost of doing business. Atrike a conversation with the thulla who got offended. Tell them the reason and may be do better next time if it means to light up tandoor again then do it.This is a shithole of country we live in. Policia thulle se na doati achchi na dushmani.

March 14, 2025 at 5:59 pmGive a complaint to SP or higher police authority of your region or File a private complaint before the magistrate. You could also submit a petition to district collector of you region either directly or through online PPP (Petition Processing Portals). He’II never do that again!-

March 14, 2025 at 6:02 pmLawyer here.
According to section 15 of Delhi shop and establishment act, the closing hour for a shop is 11 P.M. unless you have permit or NOC from concerned departments. My advice is to get a permission first before taking any legal action.

March 14, 2025 at 7:39 pmThe thing is though it is not up to police to implement this and definitely their actions here were illegal.

March 14, 2025 at 6:59 pmA permit or noc is required which is being granted easily.
Get it done and then you have several legal options available against police officials.

March 14, 2025 at 6:08 pmInstall a cctv that has a clear view of your main area. There are ones that record in a memory card and you can just plug them in. Try to place it in a spot where itβs not immediately visible but still capture everything and it must have audio recording feature as well. There are some qubo cameras on amazon that arenβt very expensive and do a great job.If you try to record with your phone they will most likely snatch it from you and get aggravated even more. The police in our country is a bigger curse than politicians.

March 14, 2025 at 7:10 pm**This is a clear case of police harassment and abuse of power, and there are strong legal remedies available. You need to follow these steps strategically:**1. **File a written complaint** with the **SP** detailing the threats, beating, and forced closure. Keep a copy and ask for a written acknowledgment.
2. **Escalate the complaint to the State Police Complaint Authority (PCA).** Every state has one, and they handle cases of police misconduct.
3. **Gather evidence**: If possible, record future threats or get witness statements. CCTV footage, medical reports (if anyone was injured), or call recordings will strengthen your case.
4. **If there is no action within a reasonable time, you can file a Writ Petition in the High Court** to seek protection and an order against police harassment. Courts have ruled against such misuse of power before. If you need guidance on drafting complaints or moving to the High Court if authorities do not act, feel free to reach out.
