Hey, I’m really desperate and need some advice regarding a frustrating and overwhelming situation that has been affecting my family.

It’s about my father’s inheritance dispute. His siblings forged his signature and sold land without his consent. They’ve been trying to scam him, and what initially seemed like a “family disagreement” quickly turned into an elaborate scheme to steal from him. At first, we thought it was just a inheritance issue between brothers and sisters, but soon it became clear that it was all about cheating my father out of his property and money.

My father now lives in Europe and cannot read or write, so he fully trusted his family. They recommended a lawyer (Lawyer 1) to help with the case, and at first, my parents were hopeful. However, Lawyer 1 demanded large amounts of money for legal fees and court expenses, but nothing happened. No progress was made, and there was no clear communication. We now believe that this lawyer was a scam, and we’ve been trying to get the money back, but there’s been no progress so far.

Afterward, my father hired a second lawyer (Lawyer 2), but I’m also highly suspicious of him. He hasn’t provided any written communication from the court, and he even asked my mother to write a letter to Lawyer 1 requesting a refund, which should have been his job. Whenever my parents ask for updates, he just gives excuses. When they finally traveled to India and met him in person, instead of discussing the legal case, he asked my mother personal questions about her relationship with my father, like why she loves him and whether she cooks Tamil food for him. It all feels very suspicious.

At this point, I’m really at my wit’s end and don’t know what to do. I want to get the money back from Lawyer 1 and find a trustworthy lawyer who can actually help with this case. This situation is making my parents ill, especially my father, and I can’t watch them suffer like this any longer. It’s heartbreaking to see them being betrayed by their own family.

What steps should I take to get the money back? How can I find a reliable lawyer who will actually take action and not just make excuses?

I’ve already contacted some legal bodies (courts), but I really need concrete steps to move forward.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

If a lawyer has taken fees from you and not filed the case, you can file a complaint against him with the State Bar Council.

Thank you. I already reached out to them via email to check if these advocates are registered, but I haven’t received a response yet.

Do you know how to file a complaint there? Is there a specific form I need to fill out, or is an email enough? Also, do I need a lawyer for this, or can I file it on my own?

You can find an advocate’s enrollment number from the State Bar Council website, as most states maintain online directories. If the information is unavailable online, you can contact the State Bar Council office directly.

You can file a complaint against an advocate yourself or engage another advocate to assist you. While there is no fixed statutory format, it is advisable to follow a structured format similar to a court complaint.

The procedure for filing complaint may vary across states, so it is best to visit the State Bar Council office to confirm specific requirements and submit a written complaint accordingly.
