I never thought I’d find myself in a situation like this, and I feel utterly horrible about it. To get straight to the point, I accidentally sent my rent payment to the wrong UPI ID, and since it’s a name-based UPI, I have no idea who this person is. From my bank passbook, I can see that their bank is HDFC, Jubilee Hills, but that’s about all I know.

I’ve already reached out to HSBC (my bank) to reverse the transaction, but as expected, it’ll take some time. I’ve also sent small 1-rupee transactions with a note asking the person to return my money, but no luck there either. I’m aware that even if I go to their bank, they probably won’t be able to help.

What I’m hoping for is that someone might be able to help me find this person’s mobile number so I can at least directly ask them to return my money. I know it’s a long shot, but at this point, I’m not sure what else to do.

Please, I know I made a mistake, so if you’re here just to give sarcastic “lesson learned” comments, save them. I’m already beating myself up over this. I’ve seen similar posts, and I know these things don’t always work out, but I’m reaching out anyway.

Any genuine advice or help would be truly appreciated. Thanks!

Working through the bank is the right procedure. I was the recipient few months back of 20K from some random person. But there are black money laundering frauds going on so I refused to send back and asked him to contact their bank and ask the bank to nullify the transaction. It was painful for him, but it took a week and I received a message from my bank and I approved that message. It is complicated but that is the right way.

Thanks but not everyone is as noble as you are returning the poor man’s money. There’s not a thing in the world that I’d be able to do if the receiver decides to ignore bank’s call.

The bank writes to the other bank first. You make your case strong first by providing proof of mistake (similar sounding name etc).

I’ve had terrible experience with HDFC. I have no expectations from them at all.

I remember reading news RBI has launched helpline number for such mistakes. Call it.

Don’t call in fake numbers on Google. Check RBI websites

Go through your bank. There is so much fraud these days that the accidental recipient, even if genuine , would be scared to do the money back to you.

The bank route may take some time but will be safe for both of you.

NAL. My friend was in the exact same spot a few days ago. He sent 10k to someone by mistake. Fortunately, it was to the same account he sent money a day before when paying for his swiggy instamart order so we were able to find the delivery boy’s number. However, the twist here was that the delivery boy was using his friend’s UPI QR Code instead of his own and we had to negotiate with the friend several times.

We played good cop bad cop. I threatened him with police complaint and legal notice and my friend was being nice and saying “yes I made a mistake. I am a student please return my money bla bla bla”. At first he sent 4k and then was saying he won’t be able to send the full amount because there will be some “tax” cut from his account. I very strictly told him UPI has no charges and if he doesn’t send the remaining 6k I’ll take legal action. He sent the 6k next morning thankfully.

Of course, we filed a complaint to both SBI (my friend’s bank) and NPCI about this transaction.

I hope you get your money back OP. But, the bottom line is, if the recipient refuses to consent to the reversal transaction, there isn’t much you can do about it.

Firstly visit your bank and write a letter stating money got credited to wrong person and ask your bank to request fund freeze or hold from recipient bank for the amount.
You can provide them the official mail id of the recipient bank branch (I don’t know but u may get it via toll free number of the bank ) to your bank through which they can communicate. It may work imho.
